Irene was born in Warsaw, Illinois and lived most of her life in the Milwaukee area. She had many setbacks in her life, losing her father at an early age, going from a fairly well off family to one of poverty after her father's passing. Her mother had to work to support the children, so her sister Rosalie often had to assume the role of caregiver for Barbara and Irene. The special bond with her sister Rosalie continued throughout Irene's lifetime. She was familiar with hunger when she was young, which is what sparked her joy in feeding family and cooking for them to make sure they were satisfied.
Irene had a somewhat awkward transition into adult life, and then she found her true love in the person of Francis Lee Jetty (Fritz). They had dreams of what they would accomplish together, and they were made for each other. Sadly, he passed away unexpectedly of an industrial accident at the age of 23. Suddenly, Irene was a widow with a young child.
A new chapter began with her marriage to Bert Poi, and shortly following, the arrival of her daughter Karen. Their new combined family lived in West Allis for many years.
Irene enjoyed knitting and crocheting, in addition to many other crafts including stained glass, and stamping.
Irene worked for many years at the Milwaukee County Mental Health facility where she performed staff scheduling.
She also worked at The Village of Manor Park (formerly Methodist Manor) as a nurses aid and later in the administrative area.
Since Irene chose to be a very private person, there will be no services held, her body will be cremated as she requested.
