Irene Marian Malone (80), passed September 5, 2017 at 5:30am in Oakland, CA. She suffered a heart attack at my home Saturday evening and was immediately taken to Sutter Alta Bates Medical Center. Her family was by her side all weekend as her three grandchildren, Meghan, Allison, and Bryce, enjoyed each other’s company and played back at the house. Irene lived life to the fullest and on her terms, up until the very end. Two weeks ago, Meghan and Allison spent seven days at Irene’s house. All three grandchildren had a wonderful time together and have many memories of Irene’s joy and vitality during that time.

She spent last week traveling in Northern California, including a road trip with a friend to Monterey and Carmel. The hours prior to being admitted to the hospital, Irene spent visiting with family, seeing and hugging her grandchildren, and enjoying a leisurely day talking and reading a book with me in the living room. I do not think she could have asked for a better day had she planned it herself.

After several days in the ICU and while holding my hand, Irene went peacefully in her sleep, with grace and dignity. Her generosity and love will never be forgotten.
