Four years ago...how time goes by.  And yet, Dr. Ilda is not forgotten. Yesterday, one of my students spoke about Dr. Ilda to me and the other reading specialists here at his school to let us know the impact she had on his life when she did a curriculum based reading assessment when he was a fifth grader. It has made all the difference. I was so touched that he recognized this. He is now a senior and has made tremendous progress. So when I read this email later that day, the coincidence truly warmed my heart.

To Dear Ilda's Family,

I have just heard of Ilda's passing and I am so sorry for your loss. Ilda was such a vibrant, inspirational, knowledgeable woman filled with passion, love and light. I have been a special education teacher for 45 years and no one impacted my professional life more than Ilda. She taught me how to teach reading, addressing individual needs, with an approach that continues to be successful. I have her Balanced Literacy Plan worksheets enshrined in plastic sleeves bound in my special reading binders. Every year, as school begins, I pull out the notebooks to organize and prepare assessments that I am confident will be successful. I cannot begin to tell you how many lives she has touched. I cannot tell how many times I have witnessed a child's eyes brighten as they realize they are reading because of Ilda's influence!  I can't begin to count the parent's who understood the reading process for their child because of Ilda's clear and direct reading vision. Ilda was a  beacon of light and hope.  I am crushed by this news.  She inspired and motivated me to be the best that I could be. Ilda did not just float those words,.......she came into my work space, met my students and gave me the tools and strategies to evolve.  I loved Ilda. I promise you her life will continue to impact other lives.......like a drop of water that ripples out forever.

Always in time… we are together …living all moments…condolences…Leo

My deepest sympathy to Dr. Ilda's family and friends. She will be missed. Her knowledge, contributions, and expertise will live on. I'm so sorry that I won't ever have the chance to ask her questions about my students' reading challenges. She would be so proud of the children she touched and their reading progress that I witness due to her work. I will always be grateful for everything I learned from her. Her legacy will go on. She was amazing!

Brandy, Amberly, Liara,  and friends.  All your beautiful words and stories were a wonderful tribute to your mom and friend.  Ilda was always so proud of all of you, and today was an amazing example.  My deepest sorrow for the loss of this great woman.  I love you all.  Hugs and kisses to you Jeff, Margaret, Elaine and the amazing Carreiro-King family.
Ilda loved reading and always…
Ilda loved reading and always sent educational items to the kids for their birthdays and holidays.
It’s been close to 45 years since I last talked to Jeff and Ilda. My memory of them together was inspiring, how lucky they were to find each other, and now know what a incredible legacy Ilda leaves behind. Jeff I hope you read this, I never forgot about you guys, and what a impression you both had on me. I am so sorry for you and your family. Don’t cry because it’s over, Smile because it happened, that’s what I hope in time for you.
I will forever cherish the impact Ilda has had on my life.  Her knowledge and guidance have made me a better teacher.  Thank you Ilda! I will miss you.
I remember meeting Ilda and her family on a cruise with my then-boyfriend, Enoch. Ilda was our table mate at the Captain's Ball. Every night was an exchange of stories, love, and laughter as if we had known them our entire lives. Ilda always reminded us that, "Enoch told her that I would become his wife". To no one's surprise but my own, we got married. Something magical that night happened. What started as just a conversation of newly found friends became a new bond and a gaining of family.

Ilda is a very attentive and loving person. She always remembered to just say hello on birthdays, holidays, and special occasions. She shared herself wholeheartedly. She shared her love for teaching and being a present mother with me. When I shared with her that I too wanted to become an educator, she was there with encouragement and guidance.

What I love about Ilda is that she was always teaching just by breathing. Everything was a teachable moment. Some summer's Enoch, the children, and I would visit. I love that Ilda always had a method for everything. She would model her teaching methods through reading and listening to my children, we would go to the beach and she would use her recycled objects, and she would prepare for her yearly training with her sister Elaine in the summer. I used to wonder when Ilda got to sleep because she was always on the go but she always made time for us.

Ilda always had loving stories of being an educator, her loving stories of her and Jeff raising the girls as she would say. There were opportunities where I got to learn about her parents meeting one another and her Sister's growing up. She shared with me her love for her grandchildren and the time and space she made for them. When I think back on the time that she allowed for us to spend with her, I now realize that Ilda was giving me a blueprint of what a strong and successful all-around Woman, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Career woman looks like. Ilda made time for her family and others.

I thank Ilda and her family for allowing us to become family.

We send love to all of you,

Nayonna, Enoch, Isaiah, and Alisa Purnell
Thank you for sharing all the wonderful memories and photos of your mom.  Sorry I couldn't attend in person. I worked along side of her while she was coaching staff at NMRSD.  She taught us so many reading techniques to use with our students .  May she rest in peace.

This is embarrassing. For me. But Ilda wouldn't have this any other way.

When the show '24' was on (the show with the clicking clock and Kiefer Sutherland playing the intrepid and no-bathroom-breaks agent Jack Bauer), I was a big fan. So much so that I would send my friends emails with commentary of each episode. When I found out Ilda watched too, I naturally started send her the emails as well.

Eventually those emails became a blog called The Bauer (yes it still exists and no I won't post the link here as it's not family friendly...which is probably why Ilda liked it). And Ilda was one of its biggest fans.

At one point, I set up an online store with merch based on the blog. Ilda was the only one who purchased anything from it. I believe it was a small pillow and it probably had some sarcastic message on it.

Told her she was crazy for getting it, but that was Ilda.

Love you forever Ilda.

One of four posters displayed at the church today. We had this made as a gift for Mother's Day. It includes silhouettes of all five grandchildren. Avo is Portuguese for grandmother. The kids' attempts at pronunciation yielded two different names that stuck: "Avi" from Amberly's kids and "Vwa Vwa" from Brandy's kids.
