To the King Family,

I am heartbroken…Ilda has left this world far too soon, but I am sure my sorrow reaches only a fraction of the depth of your grief.

Dr. Ilda’s energy and positivity were ever-present, and she elevated spirits in whatever space she entered.

Ilda and I had a long professional relationship that began when I called her for a reference on a teacher applicant with whom she had consulted and trained. I immediately knew I wanted to work with Ilda! (The teacher got the job, too!)

Through our 15-year collaboration, Ilda improved the diagnostic and teaching of reading skills of dozens of teachers. She was relentless in her mission to ensure the teachers in front of our most vulnerable learners, those with disabilities, had the tools and strategies to change the trajectory of their students’ reading skills so that students’ potential was realized. Ilda was persistent in her pursuit of the latest research and continually updated her practices to reflect brain science and incorporate new findings into her professional work. I, and the teachers with whom I worked, learned more from Dr. Ilda than we ever could have assimilated on our own. She provided practical applications to the science of reading; she helped teachers try and tweak new approaches; she helped principals understand the importance of proper methodology and to support teachers as they explored new strategies. And, just as important as training teachers, she helped the students and parents understand that learning to read was possible.

Ilda gave hope. She gave knowledge. She gave her time and passion to so many.

Ilda was more than a professional colleague; she became a friend. We had many early morning or late evening phone calls to review the work planned or follow-up needed, as Ilda always ensured the work with teachers was complete and could be supported. I was so honored to be included in Ilda’s small group of guests to attend her award ceremony at Lesley University a number of years ago. Ilda was recognized for her work with teachers across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the impact her teachings and work had upon countless students! She so deserved this award as I knew firsthand how she had impacted the small corner of the state where I worked.

My heart has been so heavy with sadness since Ilda’s passing and I will forever keep her vibrant spirit in one of my heart’s fondest places.

My deepest sympathies and prayers are extended to Ilda’s family; may you your happiest memories surface over time so that her joy and hopefulness remain in your hearts whenever you think of your wife, mother, and grandmother. I know the grief will also be part of your emotional journey as one cannot help but feel the pain of such a loss.

May the light of Ilda’s spirit forever shine on you all.

Sharon (Lyons) Stewart

A year ago my mother printed …
A year ago my mother printed and framed three copies of her senior year photo of her on a motorcycle. She gave one each to me and Amberly and hung one up at her house, saying it was how she wanted to be remembered. I have no doubt that her rebellious nature will always be remembered — it was what made her such a fierce advocate for change! Today this photo is at the church surrounded by other mementos.

I adored learning from Ilda and Our friendship meant the world to me. We were hipsters together (both had hip surgery around the same time). She taught me about reading and I taught her what to binge watch when you're laid up recovering. ❤️ Her legacy remains in all the students who had the benefit of learning to read because of her.
Ilda was my Girl Scout troop leader and significant role model for me.  I’m well into adulthood, but she remained interested in what I was doing.  She took the time to get to know me, making me feel special and valued.  Ilda asked the best questions!  I’m grateful for her presence in my life and deeply saddened by her death, much too soon.

I worked with Ilda when she did reading consulting in Millbury. She was the most knowledgeable person I had ever met in the field of reading. From this collegial connection there grew a spirit of friendship and understanding between us. I feel so blessed to have known this vibrant and special woman. Patty

Martha Perry Lowe School.  Everyone busy with hopscotch and the like at recess.   Not us!  Ilda obsessed with horses and her two long braids were my reins and around and around the school yard we went all year.  I imagine her riding a wondrous stallion straight up through the clouds to Heaven.

Rest In Peace, I’ll miss you beyond words, my beautiful friend.

I'm a friend of the Carreiros of Hamilton, Ontario... and they've spoken (Especially Grace) so fondly and lovingly of Ilda, I feel like I met her. Thanks for sharing her story in the obit. I am praying for you and your family as you navigate the world without her physical presense.
So sorry for your loss she was an amazing woman and will be dearly missed

Ilda left her mark on all who knew her and learned from her in Northborough where she taught us so much about how to teach reading. I will miss her incredible spirit and confidence in being loud and proud of her authentic self. My sincere condolences to the family.
I was so sorry to hear of Ilda's passing. Such an amazing woman! So much energy and passion for life, her work and her family! My heart goes out to Jeff, Amberley, Brandy and the rest of the family. I will miss her!

At the Kentucky Derby Museum. Ilda loved horses. I'd say she's the Winner, by a mile!
