In Loving Memory of Ida “Peggy” Metheny

Ida “Peggy” Metheny (Wheeler) of Terra Alta, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on August 9, 1941, Peggy lived a life full of love, laughter, and generosity.

She is survived by her children: Gary W. Metheny (Christine) of Fairmont, Kevin Metheny of Terra Alta, and Lisa Carpenter of Terra Alta. She was a proud grandmother to Lakin Metheny-Thomas of Terra Alta, Brittany Prunty, Hunter Carpenter of Terra Alta, and Brett Metheny (Elise) of Kill Devil Hills, NC.  Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Treyton and Jaxon. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Everett and Beverly Metheny of Short Gap, WV, and brother-in-law Walter Evans of Bruceton Mills, WV, as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Reverend Ernest Metheny (2020), her son E. Bradley Metheny, son-in-law Michael Carpenter, parents Dorsey William Wheeler and Lena Mae Spiker, foster siblings Mary Evans, Dave and Bea Kelley, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Duwaine and Betty Metheny, Howard and Barbara Metheny.

Peggy dedicated her career to the art of hairdressing, where she formed lasting friendships and brought joy to many. Known throughout the community for her exceptional cooking and baking, she was especially remembered for her signature laugh that could light up any room. Her warmth and generosity touched countless lives.

True to her giving spirit, Peggy chose to donate her remains to WVU Human Gift Registry for Medical Research, continuing her legacy of helping others. Honoring her wishes, there will be no formal services. Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of Garrett County (hospiceofgc.org) Oakland, MD, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital cure.childrenscancer.org) —two organizations close to her heart and to which she regularly contributed or to a local church or charity of choosing in her memory. 

Interment will be completed at a later date at Miller Cemetery in Terra Alta, WV.

Peggy will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
