Hyman's obituary

Hyman Ray Crippen, resident of Huntington Beach, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday May 20th, 2023. He is survived and deeply missed by his wife: May, their two children: Renee and Garrett, siblings: Jacqueline, Martin, and Jeffrey, and three beloved dogs.

Hyman Ray Crippen was born in Akron, Ohio on July 11th, 1958 to Barbara Joy Crippen (neé Weinberg) and Harvey Allen Crippen. He was the eldest of four siblings who grew up in Whittier, CA. Hyman was an adventurous, athletic, and intelligent child who loved learning about survival, nature, and all the outdoor activities that he could experience: hang-gliding, body surfing, canoeing, skiing, spear fishing, biking, roller blading, jogging, hiking, and camping.

Hyman went to La Serna High School in Whittier, CA and was a member of B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO). BBYO turned out to be an endless source of friends and social activities for Hyman. Hyman surrounded himself with smart people and kept their grades up while juggling varsity sports, cruising Whittier Blvd Friday nights, raging at concerts and parties Saturday night and spending the weekend days in the ocean, or on the side of a mountain somewhere.

Hyman excelled academically and studied Aerospace Engineering at Harvey Mudd College, until an unfortunate hang-gliding accident ended his studies. He went on to graduate in Aeronautical Engineering degree from Cal Poly University at Pomona. He was extremely proud of his design work at Rockwell International and Boeing.

Hyman met his wife, May, in 1993. They married in 1996, and they had their daughter Renee in 1997 and their son Garrett in 2001. They lived in a beautiful home in Huntington Beach, CA. Hyman loved caring for his wife, children, and their many, many pets throughout the years. He spent his weekends building elaborate hydroponics systems for May’s homestead garden, conducting scientific demonstrations with Renee and Garrett, and walking three squirmy dogs. Hyman was very active in his community; he often provided his neighbors a helping hand and met his AmRRON ham radio group weekly (KI6RTH).

Friends and family will remember Hyman for his long-winded stories, practical jokes, and heart full of kindness. He will be greatly missed.
