Hưng's obituary

Hưng Thế Vũ passed away on January 23, 2023 at 69 years old with his wife and daughter by his side after a short, valiant battle against lung cancer. He was born June 18th, 1953 in Quần Liêu, Nam Định, Vietnam. He was the third child to Vũ Ngọc Thu and Trần Thị Chỉnh.

Hưng is preceded in death by his parents and brother Hùng Thế Vu. He is survived by his wife, Kim Vũ; his daughter, Julie and husband Stefan; two grandchildren, Eliza and Cora; his sisters Vũ Thị Cúc and Vu Thi Ngoc Lan, and nieces: Vũ Thị Ngọc Diệp, Vũ Thị Liên Chi, Bùi Thị Bảo Châu , Vũ Thị Mai Anh, and their families.

Hưng had a deep love for the water, and spent much of his free time at the beach, fishing, and boating. When he wasn't near the water, he enjoyed gardening and cooking, and often shared his delicious recipes with his daughter, Julie. She learned to understand his measurements of various sized spoons, bowls, and finger marks. He was a walking encyclopedia, and was always the go-to resource before the days of Google. He had a curious mind and was always eager to learn, absorbing new information constantly.

Hưng was a proud veteran, having fought alongside the US special forces as a second lieutenant in the Special Mission Services "Hắc Long" Black Dragon unit Group 71 (Đoàn công tác 71) during the Vietnam War. He was responsible for 6 men recon teams and served as Team Leader of team #716. “He was described as “smart, brave, and quick” which helped bring his team home safely. He always volunteered for the hard and tough operations and the most special thing about him was his faith, being dedicated to pray every night, no matter what.”

He emigrated from Vietnam to the United States in 1975, and worked hard to build a new life for himself and his family. He worked at Jack Link’s meatpacking plant and a greenhouse as a young man before pursuing higher education, earning an Associates Degree in Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technology at the age of 53. He worked as a machinist at Collins Instrument for over 40 years, where his dedication and hard work were respected by all. His coworkers described him as "patient, intelligent, humble, humorous, and a loyal man." He was quiet but had a quick wit, and was a hard, efficient worker who never had an unkind word to say about anyone.

Above all, Hưng was known for his kindness, patience, fierce love, humility, and intelligence. He had an enormous heart that overflowed with selflessness, and he always gave to those with less, even when he didn't have much himself. He raised his daughter Julie to be the same way, and his warmth and generosity were contagious. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at St John Vianney Catholic Church, 12600 84th Ave NE, Kirkland, WA 98034 on February 3rd, 2023 at 11:00AM with a viewing at 10:30AM at the church. There will be a reception after the funeral at the church with food and time to share stories and speeches about Hưng.
