Hulya's obituary
Hulya Sansoy, a beloved daughter, sister, and dedicated medical social worker, passed away peacefully. She is survived by her mother, Leyla Sansoy, and her brother, Sabri Sansoy. Hulya was born and raised in Las Vegas, New Mexico, following her parents' emigration from Turkiye.
Hulya graduated from Boston University in 1996 with a Master’s in Social Work and held a prestigious position at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. She was a licensed medical social worker (LMSW) and a multilingual professional, fluent in Spanish, Turkish, and **French.
Her career was distinguished by her diverse experience in a variety of settings, including inpatient acute care, outpatient chronic care (Nephrology/Endocrinology), hospice, skilled and long-term care, addiction medicine and refugee and resettlement programs. She also collaborated with the FBI in supporting human trafficking victims, and worked in young adult and adult drug recovery courts, federal and correctional facilities, Healing to Wellness Native American courts, and intensive outpatient programs (IOP)**.
Hulya was recognized for her outstanding contributions to social work, earning the TOP SW award from the World Health Organization for 2018-2019. She was published in the 2012 Case Management Journal and received a recognition letter from Congresswoman Michelle Lujan-Grisham in 2019.
Her expertise spanned a wide range of therapeutic modalities, including Mindfulness, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), somatic and experiential therapies, body-centered psychotherapy, relapse prevention, psychoeducation, solution-focused, person-centered, strength-based, and trauma-informed care. Hulya was deeply committed to promoting shame reduction, self-love, acceptance, and integrative/holistic interventions in her practice.
Hulya was deeply inspired by her late father, Dr. Orhan M. Sansoy, MD, who served as her mentor. Her warmth, compassion, and dedication to helping others will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
