I was deeply saddened when I heard the news of Hugh's passing.
When I think of him I think of halos, ambiance, and legacies. He seemed to listen more than he spoke, and his halo was one of respectfulness for others. He was like a role model of how a man can be gentle and strong at the same time, he bringing a quiet, supportive ambiance to suffuse Piali's energetic vision with the steady always- being there- ness, and being the emotional rudder.
When I met Hugh's parents, I understood the legacy of broad-mindedness, love of other cultures, and traveling that he had inherited from them.
When I see his sons with warm and loving personalities, staying in close touch with the family ,I realize the legacy of family values that Hugh has imparted to them.
Respectfully submitted,
Gouri Datta

Dear Piali,
Sending lots of strength and peace for the day(s) ahead to you, Keiron and Brenton. Lots and lots of love, and a big hug that can effectively transfer all the love that I am feeling right now, while thinking of you and the family.

I'm so sorry about reading the news about Hugh. I was a graduate student a Brown University together with Hugh, we shared an apartment for a year or two, together with Matthew Moelter. I remember well the time I had the chance to spend at Hugh's home in Groton, MA, at his parents house. At the time, without any relatives in the US, this became almost like a second home to me. I will miss Hugh very much.

Dear Piali, Keiron and Brenton - I'm so sorry that fate took Hugh from you at much too early an age. I regret not having taken the time to get to know him better. I did enjoy our occasional encounters on Pin Hill while I was walking my dog and while Hugh was lugging a heavy backpack in training for some future adventure. Willie and I will not be able to attend the memorial service as we will be on our way to Africa for a safari with family. Sincerely, Darrell & Willie

Could not believe it when informed about Hugh, a quiet charming man.How unfair. My heart goes out to Paili, his sons and his mother, Marion. I was privileged to be Pediatrician for Hugh and Piali’s 2 wonderful boys. I shared his love of nature.

Hugh was a quiet shining light and example of how to live life. He will forever be with me. Sending so much love to Piali, Brenton, Keiron and Marion. Your loss is unimaginable, yet his light lives on.
Blessings
