Hugh's obituary

Hugh Howard Shannon

Beloved Father, Grandfather, and Friend

Hugh passed away peacefully at the young age of 71 on November 4, 2023 with his daughters, Holly and Melissa, by his side. Though he valiantly battled with Parkinson’s, he proudly fought to be around for his family and friends whom he cared for fiercely. His daughters and grandkids were his life and everything he did was for them. Hugh’s work ethic, determination, and charismatic personality has allowed him to be successful in all areas of his life.

Hugh grew up in Southeast Michigan where he was involved in all sports, baseball being his favorite. As he became an adult, he continued his love for sports, including joining a men’s hockey team where he was MVP! Hugh was also an avid runner and enjoyed participating in many races, including the annual Detroit Turkey Trot. He traveled all over the world with work, always coming back with the best stories of his adventures. In 2010 his company, Desoutter Industrial Tools, relocated him to South Carolina (only minutes from where his daughter, Holly, had moved the year before!). Here he continued to travel and make a name for himself, eventually earning the title of Master Trainer within the company. After 23 years, Hugh needed to put his health first and reluctantly retired from Desoutter in 2018.

He is survived by his two daughters Holly Philipkosky (Jon) and Melissa Shannon-Hagen (Michael); His five grandchildren (who affectionately called him Poppy and Pay Paw), Noah, Jace, Zachary, Mirabel, and Maya; His nieces, nephew, and all of his many close friends he’s made; His amazing cat, Winnie, whom he rescued off the streets 12 years ago. Hugh is preceded in death by his mother, Olga Shannon and father, Hugh Shannon; His sisters Barbara Shannon and Patricia Binkley and Brother-In-Law Dale Binkley.

Hugh’s generous heart, love for his family and friends, and that dazzling smile (voted prettiest smile in high school!) will be remembered and cherished by many for years to come. In honor of this strong, stubborn, proud man we are hopeful that fun stories will always be told and laughs will always be shared.
