Hugh's obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Hugh Thomas Connelly announces his passing on February 24, 2021 at the age of 73. A wonderful husband to his wife Sandra and devoted father to his daughter Lauren Connelly Bowser, he is also survived by his sisters, Jean and June Connelly, and nephew Dan Connelly. The son of Miriam and Ken Connelly, Hugh was born in Hopewell, VA. In 1952, his family moved to Dallas, PA, a place that held many fond memories for him, which include attending Gate of Heaven Catholic School, having a paper route, learning how to horseback ride, and swimming at Harvey’s Lake. During his teen years, his parents moved to Chicago, IL where he graduated from Thornridge High School and began his college education at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. During his sophomore year, Hugh enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam as a member of the 1st Amphibian Tractor Battalion, “A” Company, earning commendations and medals for his service. Later in life, he was extremely proud to be a member of the committee that honored his battalion’s many deeds and heroism by creating a memorial wall exhibit at the General Alfred M. Gray Research Center at Quantico, Virginia (Amtrac.org) After serving in Vietnam, Hugh returned to the University of Illinois to complete his undergraduate degree and went on to earn a PhD in Economics. After graduation, he took a position with the Federal Government. During a career that spanned 40 years of service to the Executive Office of the President in the Office of Management and Budget, he played an integral role in the publication of the first Historical Tables volume in 1986 and was promoted to Deputy Branch Chief of the Budget Analysis Branch in 1990. After his retirement, Hugh and Sandie relocated to Sherman Oaks, CA to be closer to their daughter. A memorial service with military honors will be held on April 29, 2021 at the Los Angeles National Cemetery. In remembrance of Hugh, donations can be made to the Marine Corps Semper Fi Fund.
