Murray (AKA Skip)'s obituary

On Sunday, August 27, 2023 Howard Winsor Greene Jr (AKA Skip & Murray), a devoted yoga teacher and friend to many (fur and human), passed away at the age of seventy-five at home in Albuquerque NM.

Born May 4, 1948, to Howard W. and Barbara Mullarky Greene, in Monroe, Louisiana, he spent the early years of his life in the hometown where his grandparents also resided.

Howard’s family moved to Dallas, TX, where he attended St. Thomas Aquinas elementary school, Jesuit College Preparatory School, and graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1966. He later went on to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock and Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches Texas.

After college, Howard worked in the hospitality industry in New York City and then in 1997 in Taos, NM. After a short move back to Dallas, Howard, now known by the name Murray, moved to Breckenridge, Colorado in 1998 and found his true home within the Yoga Community in Summit County, CO.

Murray began his Anusara Yoga experience in 2000 at a New Year’s Retreat in Ouray Colorado taught by Anthony Bogart. An unlikely yogi due to several physical challenges, Murray was inspired by the philosophical and mythological aspects of Yoga, the impetus to further immerse himself in personal study and physical practice.

Murray went on to study with John Friend and Douglas Brooks and took his place in the yoga community as a warm hearted lover of the Hindu gods and goddesses, with their stories and archetypes guiding him, and those he taught, through the labyrinth of life. Murray further went on to complete his 500 hr E-RYT to share his love of yoga with others.

In 2014, he made a brief move to Denver, moving back to Alma in 2016. In 2021 Murray moved again to Albuquerque in 2021 where he passed at home.

Murray’s Yoga Kula was his forever family. He was deeply inspired by the warm affection from every student he encountered while teaching at both Abby Hall (Breckenridge Masonic Lodge) and Meta Yoga Studios.

He was at his best when he was studying and teaching or spending time with his pets. The Yoga community at large has lost a dear friend who had influenced and inspired many lives.

Preceded in death by his grandparents and parents, Murray is survived by his three sisters Pamela Keenan (Bob Keenan), Libby McGee (Ron McGee) and Diane Walton (Don Walton) and his three nephews Brian, Grady and Ben.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2023, 11am-12pm at the Grand Timber Lodge, 75 Snowflake Drive, Breckenridge, in the conference room adjacent to The Boot Saloon with a reception to follow the service(12:00 pm-1:30pm).

The celebration will continue from 2:00 pm -4:00 pm at Meta Yoga Studios, 118 S Ridge Street, Breckenridge, CO to honor Murray’s Contribution to the local yoga community through an immersion of Yoga modalities.

These gatherings are open to all those who loved Murray.
