Howard Fong, an actor, writer and activist, passed away the first week of June of 2021 in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Fong was an irrepressible and beloved member of the entertainment community. He has been in many films, television shows and commercials, including THE JOY LUCK CLUB, TIL DEATH DO US PART, FREZNO SMOOTH, ZEN NOIR, PARTY OF FIVE, UNSOLVED MYSTERIES; “MURDER 101”, ANYTHING ANYMORE, THE SHOWBIZ SHOW WITH DAVID SPADER, FAST MONEY, CLICK, CRASH, CHRISTMAS MAIL, ANITA HO, MICKY’S SUMMER RESORT, THE HERO SUPER, BATTLE B-BOY, AGAINST NIGHT, SAMURAI COP 2: DEADLY VENGEANCE, and DARLING NIKKI.
Mr. Fong was commercially represented by Hugh Leon at Coast to Coast Talent in Los Angeles. In his later years, Mr. Fong was known for his "impromptu naps," and Mr. Leon recounted how, at the agency's 2019 holiday party, in the midst of all the festivities and crowds of people, Mr. Fong was still able to enjoy a little nap in the lobby. Mr. Fong, never one to miss an opportunity for humor or fun, would also always email his agents saying "I, Howard Fong, hereby confirm my audition for..." everytime he would confirm his auditions. Also a talented writer, Mr. Fong wrote the play YUT HO, which debuted at the David Henry Hwang Playhouse with actors Ping Wu, Jennifer Betit Yen, and Donald Watson. The play was directed by the late Elizabeth Sung.
Mr. Fong was an active member of the AAPI community and a member of the famed Media Action Network for Asian Americans. Mr. Fong worked tirelessly to connect and support communities of color, particularly the Asian American community, and to promote better representation in entertainment media. Following his passing in 2021, the Asian American Film Lab staff dedicated their annual 72 Hour Shootout filmmaking competition premiere to him because they felt he personified the theme of the 2021 Shootout: Be a Hero.
