My mom (Elaine Ridley) and Horace had been friends in Chicago. In 1974 (I was 12 at the time) she decided that we would move to California, and without much planning, she bought us one-way tickets and we were on our way. Horace (& Hazel) picked us up from the airport and we stayed with them the first 3 weeks while my mom found a job and an apartment. Just 3 weeks after moving into our own place, we got called back to Chicago due to the sudden death of my grandmother. Once again my mom called on Horace for help, this time to care for my cat Toby while we were gone. He was to provide food, water, empty the litter box, and also check the apartment to make sure no one had been in there. When we returned (after several weeks), Horace informed us that he had been able to provide food and water, but nothing else. He said that Toby wouldn't let him change the litter box our check out the upstairs. He said he figured if Toby, who knew him, wouldn't let him go into any other parts of our home, then he was pretty sure that no burglar had gotten through either. And he was right, both the apartment and my kitty were in great shape when we returned. Thank you Horace for being there for us when we needed you! <3

I worked with Horace back in the olden days of Western Electric. He was a person who truly made his personal persona known. We remained friends over the years, and I will miss him in my memories. He was the man of his choice. He will always be remembered for his antics and enjoyment of life with no regrets. Rest in peace, my friend.
