Horace's obituary

Horace Sewell, 96, born April 7, 1926, departed this life on October 31, 2022.

Born in Lexington South Carolina, Horace was the 6th of 14 born to Joseph and Annie Belle Sewell. In 1942, he left Lexington for New York City. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted in the United States Army and served in World War II. His assignments took him to Morocco, North Africa, Marseille, France, and Düsseldorf, Germany, and Manila Philippines. While in Germany, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and earned a Bronze Star. After his honorable discharge, his return to New York was short lived as better opportunities were offered in the rubber factories in Akron, Ohio. In Akron, he met his late wife Dora and fathered two children. He held a second job at Henry B. Ball Jewelry Company. With hard work at Ball Co, personal integrity, and God’s favor, he retired with over 20 + years of experience in his chosen life career as a Jeweler. Horace was a faithful member of Mt. Zion AME church in Lexington and served as a Trustee. He also loved to bowl, fish, travel, play (20) board piece checkers, card games including tournament bridge and pinochle. He was an avid NASCAR fan. However, core to his existence was the love of his family including his 46+ years of marriage to Dora E. (Gray) Sewell.

Horace is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Dora; siblings, Virginia (Sewell) Williams, Gladys (Sewell) Corley, Joseph C. Sewell, Thelma (Sewell) Wilkerson Campbell, Martin L. Sewell, Wilbur Sewell, Rudolph Sewell, Helen (Sewell) Lewis, Isiah Sewell and of late Annie Martha (Sewell) Corley.

Survived by children, Horace Michael Sewell and Mary Quinita Sewell; sister, Shirley (Sewell) Law; brothers, Robert and Donald Sewell; grandchildren, Melanie (Sewell) Thompson, Dante Underwood, and Harrison Sewell; great grandchildren, Kristiaan, Kaleb, Kennedy Thompson, Joi and Daniel Underwood and a host of in-laws that are descendants of Sam and Mary Gray as well as loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will take place at a later date.
