Ulysses S. Grant " Hero of Appomattox"'s obituary

On Thursday, July 23, 1885, Mount Mcgregor, NY, General and former President Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant) and politically nicknamed Hero of Appomattox, a loving husband, and father of four children and general that led the Union army to victory, passed away at the age of 63 after a valiant battle with throat cancer.

Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, OH to Hannah and Jesse Grant, his father a tanner, merchant, and abolitionist. Firstborn of five children, Ulysses was the favorite of all his siblings, a daddy's boy. At the age of five, Ulysses started a subscription school and later two private schools. He eventually entered a U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, nominated by his father, starting his early Military career in 1839. He later graduated on June 30, 1843, ranked 21st out of 39 in his class, and was promoted the next day to the rank brevet second lieutenant. In 1846 Ulysses served in the Mexican war through two battles as a regimental quartermaster officer, his first role in a battle. On August 22, 1848, he married Julia Dent in St. Louis, where they went on to raise four children, Fredrick, Ulysses Jr, Nellie, and Jesse. Grant went on to gain command of the Union armies during the Civil War in 1864, leading the army to victory. He later became President of the United States in 1868 for two terms until he retired in 1877, well known for his important role as the leader of the victorious Union Army and supporter of the 15th Amendment during his office as President.

Grant was more than a general and president he was also an equestrian, an author, and an artist. Grant wrote "Personal memoirs of the Civil War", later written and published while bedridden with throat cancer passing two days after he completed his memoir. His memoirs were considered to be American classics and read by many prolific writers during the time. He also loved to paint, paying great attention to details and always using watercolor, continuing his hobby even during his time in West Point. He was known to be an excellent horseman, admired not only by friends and family but also by his soldiers and other men of importance who had served in higher rankings. He was famous for his honorability, devotion to his loved ones, and most importantly his determination.

Grant was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Root, his mother, Hannah Simpson, his brother, Samuel Simpson, his sister, Clara Rachel, and his brother, Orvil Lynch. He is survived by his wife Julia, and his four children, Fredrick, Ulysses Jr., Nellie, Jesse, and his two sisters, Mary Frances and Virginia Paine. A funeral procession will be held on Saturday, August 8, 1885, at Riverside Park on the Upper West Side of Manhatten after a funeral march through New York honoring his death.
