Happy Hilda's obituary

Hilda Leonora Empey, known lovingly as 'Happy Hilda' for her constant pursuit of happiness, peacefully returned to her Heavenly Father the morning of December 2, 2023. Born on August 11, 1951 in the Rose Park area of Salt Lake City. Hilda's journey was one filled with love, music and an unwavering commitment to nurturing those around her.

Hilda's early passion for music was discovered in Mr. Mayer's a cappella choir at West High School, a talent she continued to nurture throughout her life. Her high school years were also marked by her active involvement in many school clubs and seminary council, where she began to develop her lifelong dedication to her faith and community.

After graduating from high school, Hilda continued her education and musical talents at Dixie Junior College where she sang in Program Bureau with many who became lifelong friends. A defining moment at Dixie was when Hilda played the lead role in the musical 'Finian’s Rainbow.' This experience ignited in her a love of Ireland, eventually leading her to fulfill a lifelong dream of visiting the Emerald Isle. She continued her studies at the University of Utah, earning degrees in Early Childhood Development and Elementary Education in 1973. Her career as an educator was not just a profession but a calling. Beloved by her students, she dedicated her life to teaching, singing and educating young minds with the same love and care she bestowed upon her own family.

Hilda's family story began with her husband, W. Bruce Empey, at Dixie Junior College. Sealed for time and all eternity on June 27, 1971, in the St. George Temple. Together, they raised four wonderful children - Jesse, Ryan, Derick, and Alisa - and are blessed with 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy and pride to Hilda's life.

A woman of many interests, Hilda was known for her love for travel and shopping, and not least of all, her love for chocolate. Her home was always a place of warmth, music and caches of chocolate.

We invite you to join us in a celebration of Hilda's extraordinary life on December 16th, 11:00 at the LDS Chapel across the street from her home (200 W 500 N, St. George). It will be a time to reminisce, to share music and stories, and to honor the remarkable woman she is. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity that reflects Hilda's generous spirit and love for children would be a fitting tribute to her legacy.

As we say goodbye to our beloved Happy Hilda, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, we take comfort in knowing that her legacy of love, music, and nurturing care will continue to resonate in the lives of those she touched.
