Hershel's obituary
Hershel Glen McGhee of South Charleston, WV was born August 7, 1937, and passed away at home on October 10, 2025. He was a man of strength and character, known for his gruff exterior which concealed a heart that was filled to the brim with warmth, humor, and relentless hard work.
Hershel left his indomitable mark in the physical world through his craftsmanship. He had the skilled hands of a tireless worker who could build remarkable things. Among his many accomplishments, the three-story log cabin he built by hand stands testament to his ability to create something out of nothing, much to the amazement of those who had the privilege to witness his work. In addition, his knack for excavating mountains, and his ability to throw a mean horseshoe added to his colorful repertoire.
Though a master of many practical skills, Hershel also taught valuable life lessons to those around him. He shared his wisdom on how to maintain a vehicle, emphasized the importance of self-reliance, and imparted the idea to seek answers rather than giving up in the face of challenges. He also had a particular fondness for encouraging others to take the back road, literally. Though a metaphor for choosing the path less trodden, which often leads to unexpected adventures, it was also his favorite way to travel.
His legacy is one of determination and perseverance. His life journey stands as testament to the belief that anything is achievable if you set your mind to it.
Hershel was preceded in death by his parents, James & Nora McGhee, as well as his son Richard McGhee.
Hershel is survived by his loving daughters, Pamela Moore, Tabatha Murphy, and Kara McGhee. Hershel is also survived by his beloved sons Jeffery McGhee and Danny McGhee. He leaves behind to cherish his memory a host of grandchildren; Renee Smith, Inue Damrongchai, Brian Moore, Gavin Moore, Michael Murphy, Christina Murphy, Katherine Okerlund, Malachi Davis, Aubrielle Atkinson, Camden Atkinson, Fenway Atkinson, Christopher McGhee, Laken Johnson, and Jared McGhee as well as many great grandchildren, other close family members, friends, and neighbors.
His passing leaves a void in many lives, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A remembrance gathering will be held for Hershel on October 25, 2025, at 1:00 PM at McGhee/Songer Family Cemetery. After we gather to lay Hershel to rest, we will celebrate his life, his achievements, and the enduring impact he has had on all of us at 3371 Trace Fork Road, South Charleston. Please bring stories of Hershel, and let’s build a horseshoe pit in his memory!
