Hermine's obituary

Hermine Vasarinsh, 89 (born H. Munch, 31 Jan 1934)

Our artist has closed her studio.

She passed away peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday the 4th October 2023.

Hermine is survived by son Andrew and partner Albert, who were her dedicated caregivers these last 10 years, and daughter Velta, grandsons Eric & Ian.

She was a creative force and multi disciplinary artist for over six decades. With ongoing projects and dedication to her artistic calling until the very end.

She leaves her family with her art and inspiration, demonstrating an inquisitive and independent approach to life.

Hermine accomplished much in her life. Immigrating alone to Canada in her 20s. Gaining a BA in fine arts from McMaster through studies in art history. Hermine explored art on her own terms and expressed her individuality in clay, metal, and paints. Her work was highly technical but mostly abstract, taking form & meaning from social political awareness and reflecting personal commentary on current issues.

She set a lifelong example in never ending learning & inquiry, reading to understand in depth, challenging us all with discussions, traveling the world to experience as much as possible.

Hermine was a supportive partner in life to Pavils Vasarinsh and Bruno Mueller.

She was a great support to her children, Andrew, and Velta, and mentors to her grandsons Eric and Ian. -We will miss her profoundly,

Hermine was also the glue that connected our extended families: -the Munch’s in Austria the Porters in England, the Vasarinsh’s, the Brennan‘s, the Douglas’s, and the Kreplin’s here in Canada. She remembered our birthdays and welcomed interaction with all generations.

You were all loved and remembered by her.

Andrew & Velta give special thanks to the staff at Sunrise Retirement home for excellent and loving care during her last year.

We invite all her friends to leave memories and share this point of contact with others.

As per her wishes there will be no fuss or funeral or her passing but her grandsons, Eric and Ian hope to mount a retrospective art show of her life and work in Toronto in the spring or summer of 2024.

Please leave your contact info in the comments if you would like to be invited to attend.

Thank you everyone for your part in her life & stay well yourselves.
