Rev. Henry's obituary
Henry was baptized and attended school at Trinity Lutheran, Klein, Texas. He was raised on his ancestral dairy/truck farm, and he talked about the happy memories of the farm, driving tractors, hunting, fishing, playing with siblings, cousins, and friends. Later the family transferred their membership to St. Matthew Lutheran in Westfield, Texas where he was confirmed by Pastor Rathgeber. The summer prior to his freshman year, he met the love of his life; Debra Sue Langston of Klein, Texas. They have been inseparable ever since. He attended Klein High School 67’-69’ and continues to be a faithful Bearkat! His parents sold their dairy/truck farm due to economical growth and relocated to Buckhorn, where he graduated from Bellville High School in 1970. Henry and Debra were married on January18, 1969 in Klein, Texas.
Henry Jr. was born in Houston, Texas, and shortly after they moved to Waco. That same year Henry enrolled at Texas State Technical and graduated with an Associate Degree in Farm Machinery and Refrigeration Mechanics in 1972. While attending school he worked as a fire fighter and continued to help his father on the farm in Bellville. While attending school in 1971 their daughter, Cherie was born. After graduation they moved to Waller where he worked as a diesel mechanic. Their second daughter Misty was born 1977 in Houston. Henry became employed with Ryder and the family moved to Tomball. They attended Salem Lutheran of Rosehill, and enrolled their children into Salem Lutheran School.
Henry loved telling stories and he had lots of them. He used his stories to witness God’s grace to others. In 1984 he and Debra felt led by God to serve as support missionary with Lutheran Bible Translators in Liberia, West Africa. He was called as a mechanic but, when he arrived in Liberia their need for a carpenter builder was greater. He said, “I’m no carpenter builder but, I will leave it up to the master carpenter to teach me another skill.” After serving in Liberia they returned home to Tomball. Henry Jr., graduated from Tomball High School and attended Concordia University Austin, Texas. Henry, Debra, and girls moved to Mequon, Wisconsin where he graduated Concordia University in 1989 with a Bachelors Degree in Theology. Cherie moved to Austin to attend Concordia University. Henry was accepted at Ft Wayne Theological Seminary, Indiana, where he graduated in 1993 with a Masters of Divinity/ Missiology-Theology. Debra completed her nursing degree, Henry and Cherie graduated from Concordia University, Austin.
Henry served his delayed Vicarage in 1992 at St. Paul Lutheran in Big Spring Texas. Henry was ordained at his home congregation Salem Lutheran, Rosehill, 1993. His first call was to St. Mark Lutheran, in Mineral Wells, every weekday morning he would have a devotion on the Christian radio station. Misty graduated from high school. Henry accepted a call in 1997 to St. Michael Lutheran, in Winchester, where he volunteered as a Fire Fighter/Chaplain for twelve years, served as the LWML Pastoral Advisor for three years, and as Pastoral Delegate in the LCMS District and Synod. He was called to serve as Missionary at Large Pastor for Zion Lutheran, Tomball, and in 2009 the mission church, Cross of Christ Lutheran in Waller, was established. His last calling brought him full circle back to missions. He retired in August of 2019.
Over the years, his gentleness, enthusiastic story telling, contagious smile, and laugher were enjoyed by many. He loved to travel the world, especially traveling to Germany, visiting historical places, watch western movies, read an array of literature, play softball, dominos, and cards, as well as, visiting his beloved family, extended family, and friends. He never missed a Dallas Cowboy football game. He supported all things Texan, like cowboy boots, hats, belt buckles, Dr. Pepper, and Lone Star Light. He was proud to be an American, drive a Ford, and listen to oldies on the radio. He would spend hours in a museum reading all of the captions, he loved old cars and tractors. His favorite subject was history, especially church history, and the writings of Martin Luther.
Henry is preceded in death by his father, Henry O. Wied, and mother, Georgia E. Sibley of Sealy, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Debra, their three children; Henry Wied, Jr., and his wife Kristi of Brownwood, Texas, Cherie Arendse, and her husband David of San Marcos, California and Misty Ugarte, and her husband Ruben of Hockley, Texas; by four grandchildren Kalli and Zachary Wied, Nathan and Noah Arendse, two brothers Carl, George, and sister Leisha.
