Helen's obituary

On Saturday, December 5, 2020, Helen Slater, loving mother and devoted educator, passed away at age 60.

Helen was born on April 2, 1960 in Dayton, OH to Larry Longnecker and Adele Felker. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Ohio University in 2000, and taught in the Groveport Madison School District as an art teacher for 20 years. She was married on July 21, 1979 to David Slater. They raised two children, Matthew and Meghan.
Helen was a talented artist with a unique gift for seeing the creative potential in ordinary things. She loved to go to thrift shops and yard sales hunting for treasures, which she often incorporated into her own art or gave away as gifts to her loved ones. She lived to give to others, and there is not a person in Helen’s life whose home was not made more beautiful by Helen’s thoughtful eye. As a teacher, she fostered meaningful relationships with her students and helped them cultivate a sense of pride in their work. Helen had a vibrant, light hearted spirit that could light up a room. She loved to laugh, and her sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Helen was preceded in death by her father, Larry Longnecker, and brother Chuck Longnecker. She is survived by her son, Matthew Slater; her daughter, Meghan Slater; her mother and stepfather Adele and Otto Terrell; and her sisters, Faith Brewer, Tammy Longnecker, and Patricia Malone.

A burial service is scheduled for 12 noon on Friday, December 11 at Willow View Cemetary in Dayton Ohio. Flowers and condolences can shared to her memorial site at https://everloved.com/life-of….
