Val's obituary

Helen Valentina Sallis Phipps, nee Val, 68, of Arlington, TX, peacefully passed away on October 13, 2023 after a difficult battle with major neurocognitive disorder.

Val was born on September 13, 1955 to Fred and Mary Sallis in Dallas, Texas.  After graduation from J F Kimball High School in 1973, Val  pursued music education studies in flute at Stephen F. Austin State University and later business studies at Draughon Business College.   After graduation, she worked primarily in the medical field as administrative and secretarial support.  She retired in 2012 from her position as medical secretary at the Carrell Clinic in Dallas.  

Val was an avid handbell ringer for many years, starting with the Ruth Greer Handbell Choir of First Presbyterian Church in Richardson Texas.  It was there, in 1999, she first met her future husband, Lawrence Phipps.  In October of 2001, they were married at the same church.

Val was predeceased by her parents, her uncles Jim Sallis and Ed Sallis, and cousin Danny Sallis.  She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Phipps,  her children Glenn Montgomery, Kimberly Wallace Zastrow,  Ryan Wallace, her step-children Raymond Phipps and Meredith Phipps Christie, and her grandchildren Layla, Lukas, Kinsley, and Andrew, and her sister Anita Purcell along with cousins Sarah and Marla, niece Anna and nephews Fred and Tommy.  Inurnment will be at Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas.  Val's memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 18 at 10:00 AM at Grace Presbyterian Church, 5500 Mansfield Road in Arlington, Texas.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to New Day Arlington.
