Helen's obituary

Helen A. Mennig, 87, of Bear Path Road, passed away early, Friday, January 13, 2023, in St. Luke’s Hospital.

Born in Oneida on August 13, 1935, she was the daughter of George and Marguerite Raynor Tooke. A lifelong resident of the area, Helen was educated in Canastota Central School. She married Donald Mennig on May 29, 1954. Mr. Mennig passed away on May 13, 1975.

Prior to her retirement, Helen raised her six children all while working as a Beautician out of her own home. She was then employed with Colgate University as the head cook of the dining halls. She had also previously been employed by Cazenovia Day Care, the Oneida Indian Nation Day Care, the Thruway rest stop and Nice and Easy.

Helen was a communicant of St. Agatha’s Church and was a devout Catholic, spending much time reading the Bible. She was full of faith. Helen also enjoyed riding motorcycles when she was younger. She cared for everyone and was always willing to and tried to help everyone she could.

Surviving are: daughters, Debra Starkweather of Munnsville, Kathleen (Dean) Parmeter of Peterboro, Laurie (Claude) Colvin of Cazenovia and Donna (Mike) Doroshenko of Hamilton; one son, Donald Mennig Jr. of Syracuse and Brandi (Elijah) Hafelin (Tammy’s daughter), who was like a daughter, along with her children, Isaiah, Kayleigh, Bradley and Alyssa, whom she cherished, along with several other grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; brothers, Ronald Tooke and William Tooke her cat, Patsy and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Tammy Mennig in 2015 and siblings: Madeline, Arthur, Arlene, Margaret, Irving, David, Philip (infant), Lawrence and Roger.

Funeral services will be held 11AM, Wednesday, January 18, 2023, from St. Agatha’s Church, Canastota, where the funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverend Christopher Ballard, pastor. Spring interment will be made in Peterboro Cemetery. There will be no public hours of visitation. Contributions may be made to St. Agatha’s Church or to the American Heart Association.
