Helen's obituary
Helen spent her early and middle adulthood focused on raising her children while she worked in secretarial positions with various organizations. Once her children were grown, she embarked on a life-long dream to attend college. In 1994, at the age of 50, she received her bachelor's degree in sociology and ethnic studies from the University of California, Riverside. She put her degree to good use, working for the Veteran's Administration (VA) in Loma Linda, CA providing support services and housing to homeless veterans. Helen had a great empathy for the men and women in the program, and often expressed how much she appreciated being able to help them.
Upon retirement from the VA, Helen began a new phase of her life - to help raise her only grandchild, Madaline. Helen loved spending time with Madaline. Their favorite activities were dancing, coloring, and watching My Little Pony.
In her spare time, Helen was a true home body and loved to garden, decorate, and color on her iPad. She was very interested in current events and politics, and a supporter of the Democratic party. In the 2016 Presidential election, she was very excited to vote, with her daughter and granddaughter in tow, for a woman candidate. Following her disappointment in the result of that election, she was looking forward to the next Presidential election.
Her favorite musical artists included the Beatles, Johnny Cash, Neil Young and the Beach Boys. In the early 1960s she lived in an apartment complex with the president of the up-and-coming Beach Boys fan club, who would often come to visit. She loved to tell how she would watch them play in her baby doll pajamas.
Helen is survived by her children Jack Horner of Jacksonville, FL; Dawn Horner of Ellicott City, MD; and Kellen Fitz of Randolph, NJ; and her granddaughter, Madaline Nona Horner of Ellicott City, MD.
