Helen's obituary
Helen Eileen Thompson de Brose
Helen Eileen Thompson de Brose passed away on Friday, July 21, 2023. She was born in Leland, Iowa, on September 9, 1930. She graduated from the University of Minnesota and was then hired as Secretary of Foreign Affairs at the U.S. Embassy, from where she was transferred to Montevideo and then to Costa Rica. There she met Wolfgang Paul Brose in 1957, from Bremen, Germany, whom she married. Later, both moved to Guatemala, where their four children grew up: Annie Elizabeth Brose (RIP), Barbara Christine Brose, Thomas Paul Brose and Karen Margaret Brose, as well as her nearest family: her daughter-in-law María Carranza de Brose, his grandchildren Tatiana Isabel, Paul Cedric and Joana, married to Diego Bolaños, and his great-grandchildren Juan Diego and Cristina Bolaños.
In 1977, she opened Vista Hermosa Bookshop in zone 15 of Guatemala, a cozy bookstore that was well known for more than thirty years. Many people enjoyed not only reading there, but her company, wisdom, love and support, along with a good book and a nice cup of coffee. She was always generous to people, and her bookstore even appeared in Culture trip magazine.
She was Con decorated with 'the Bishop's Cross' for her 50 years of service in the Episcopal Church.
Helen Eileen was a brilliant woman with solid values who, throughout her life, worked very hard and showed a lot of bravery and courage in difficult times. She loved sewing and cooking, as well as reading and, in her 60s, was still exploring new things like playing guitar and diving courses. She loved to discover new things and despite the challenges she faced in her life, she always fought until the end, with a very strong will . Those of us who were lucky enough to love and know her were graced by her presence.
May our beloved and dear Helen Eileen Thompson de Brose rest in a deep Peace. May our Lord raise her high, where she will continue her path into the Light.
We will miss her, yet her life has left us many pearls along the way that will be treasured forever. She was most definitely, an example to follow.
May God have her in His glory and take her into the most high... AMEN
