Hazel's obituary
McBRIDE-DUCKWORTH, Dr. HAZEL September 11, 1945 - September 11, 2025 Dr. Hazel Elizabeth Ann McBride-Duckworth (nee McLachlan) born September 11, 1945, in Glasgow, Scotland; deceased September 11, 2025, in Toronto, Canada. She carried the fire and resilience of her heritage throughout all her 80 years. A woman of immense spirit and strength she faced life's challenges with great courage and unshakable resolve. Passionate about educating herself and those around her, she began her career as a schoolteacher going on to achieve her B.Ed, MA, and completing her PhD in Psychology at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto while widowed and raising her three young children. Throughout her career as a teacher, and both in private practice and later in life as a professor at OISE training future generations of teachers, she was a fierce advocate for many vulnerable children and young adults.
Her curious nature led to numerous travels far and worldwide, although her favourite trip was always to the sunny shores of Indian Rocks Beach. A gifted artist, her creativity lived on canvas through her paintings and shone through her essence as she literally sparkled, from the tips of her ears to the tips of her toes, wherever she went. To her family she was both anchor and inspiration, leaving a legacy of perseverance in achieving one's goals, powerful devotion to loved ones, and a penchant for country music. She is survived by her devoted husband of 36 years, Dr. Geoffrey Duckworth; her daughters, Kerry, Laurie and Kim; her grandchildren, Carling, Katie, Ryan, Emeline and Sydney; her beloved great-granddaughter, Evangeline; and her brother, Colin McLachlan. For those who had the grace to know and love her she will live eternally in our hearts and minds so we shall never walk alone. A memorial to celebrate her life will be held at a later date. The family requests any memorial donations be made to St. Michael's Hospital Toronto.
