Harvey was a good big brother. Harvey was old enough and young enough that my earliest memories were when Harvey must have been a Jr in High School. I recall Harvey playing an instrument on the High School band. I thought that was pretty neat.
I also remember Harvey making and flying model airplanes that you would fly around and around on a string. I also thought that was amazing.
One time when I was very young and curious, Harvey was preparing our old Massey Harris harvester combine, when I was curious as to why I could see the engine fan perfectly before Harvey started the engine, and now with the engine running I could no longer see the engine fan. So being curious put my finger in where the engine fan used to be. To my surprise the invisible fan hit my finger and would of cut it off if the fan was sharper or going faster.
So I took off running around the farm yard holding my injured finger crying. I could hear behind me Harvey yelling and running towards me. I thought he was going to hit me for doing something so stupid. But to my surprise I looked back and Harvey was chasing and kicking my older brother Jerold. I could not believe my luck! I guess Jerold was supposed to keep an eye on me. I felt bad that Jerold got in trouble for some stupid thing I had done.
I do not have any memories of Harvey actually playing with me, mostly I remember him doing different activities. I noticed when I got older that it was hard to know what Harvey was thinking, he seemed to do a lot of observing and not much talking and I think some of that lead to some of his social awkwardness.
I recall Harvey building a house down in Dublán, Mexico. I enjoyed going to their house and handing out and getting some of my lives questions answered that I did not dare or trust my parents to answer.
After Harvey's divorce I visited with Harvey again, he was a broken man and had aged a great deal. It was not until he remarried that he started to look more his own age again. I was sad because of the divorce, because I really like Annette, but I was happy for Harvey in that he was yet happy again in margin.
After his second wife passed away, Harvey would come to Salt Lake just to visit I suppose. One day he went to work with me and watched me work on the airplanes, start them up to isolate an electrical problem we were having. I hope he enjoyed himself, like I said he was not much for words and seemed happy just watching.
I am grateful to have had him for a big brother and am happy he is in a better place now where peace abides. Harvey will be missed.
