Harvey's obituary
A family memorial was held recently for former Whittier real estate broker and longtime L.A. County resident Harvey Allen Crippen, who died in Lawrenceville, GA, at the Gwinnett Medical Center only days before his 84th birthday.
Mr. Crippen was born July 29, 1935, in Chicago, IL, to the late Paul D. and Elsie Mae Crippen. He moved to the L.A. area in 1969. He pursued various career interests, but real estate proved his calling. Beginning as a residential agent, he subsequently opened a ReMax© agency and later moved into private practice in the commercial real estate market.
Mr. Crippen graduated in 1957 with a degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, La Fayette, Ind., where he met and married the late Barbara Weinberg that same year. The couple had four children – Hyman of Huntington Beach, Jacqueline of Yorba LInda, Jeffrey of Lawrence, GA, and Martin of Brea. All four survive their father.
The couple divorced in 1978, and Mrs. Crippen died in 2008. A subsequent marriage to Lea Lowe of in 1981 ended in 1993.
Growing up in the Norwood Park section of the city, Mr. Crippen gained notoriety as a high school football player in the greater Chicago-land area. Playing half back for Taft High, he was instrumental in sending the team to the city finals and earned recognition as an All-City player. The Chicago Tribune headlined him as a likely “All American of the Future.”
Mr. Crippen also leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Surviving siblings include Joan Parker of Fayetteville, AR, and David H. Crippen of Morrisville, NC.
Mr. Crippen was cremated and his ashes were scattered by his four children offshore of Point Fermin beach, his favorite spot for rest and relaxation.
