Harry's obituary

Harry Edgar Poag, Jr. aka Buddy, was born on August 2, 1942 to Harry and Audrey Poag. Harry passed away at St. Dominic hospital on July 9, 2021. Harry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Gilliland Poag and 3 children, Eva Poag Hunter (Roane), Michele Poag Rumbley(Roddy) and Scott Poag (Shonica). 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his father, Harry E. Poag, Sr; his mother, Audrey Evelyn Harmon Poag; his brother, William Harvey (Sonny) Poag and his sister, Judy Poag Brown. He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Dean Poag, Ellen Poag Shaw, Betsy Poag Jones, Aliene Poag and Steve Poag.

Harry was born in Macon, MS and lived there for 75 years before making the decision to move to Madison, MS to be near family. He was a dairy farmer in his early years, plant supervisor at Delta Brick and business owner of Macon Chevron Service Station. He loved his wife and children well. He was passionate about his Airstream camper and traveling in his Chevrolet to see the USA, with his forever friend and life partner, Betty, known to all as Grand and Gramps! He was the campground sheriff (officially the host) and loved this role as it allowed them to meet new people and they made many friends everywhere they traveled.

He was quietly competitive, and this showed up in many ways like building award winning Christmas parade floats, having the best fireworks shows at Christmas, and making sure his loved ones enjoyed the absolute best Christmas gatherings! He should have been a cowboy as he could tell you about every episode of Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and all the John Wayne westerns! Whatever project he took on you could rest assured he would make it happen and see it through to the end. He also believed you needed the right tools and equipment for a project and prepared for possible projects by buying tools and equipment just in case he might need them. Sometimes Grand called this hoarding, but every man understands this great need to always be prepared!

He was a devoted follower of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He lived this out in many ways and his service to his lifelong home church, Elon Baptist, was one of the ways he gave back the grace he had been given. He was an ordained Deacon, Worship Leader and Sunday school teacher in his later years. Through God’s redemption and restoration, Harry along with his wife, Betty, had the privilege of helping other people walk thru hardships of life.
