Larry and I met Harry many years ago through mutual friends over dinners and of course times at the dairy.

In 1988, Harry announced his intention to run for County Commissioner.

I contacted Harry to volunteer for his campaign. My intention was to stuff envelopes, help with lit drops, assist in phone banks or with any other very necessary campaign task.

Harry called and came by our house and accepted my offer but he had something else in mind.

Harry stated he wanted me to be his treasurer. I told Harry I was terrible with numbers and was really concerned about the campaign financial reports that are required with the County and with the Commission of Political Practice.

Harry replied “I think we could have a lot of fun with it.”

And we did.

Harry recruited me for other campaigns. It was through Harry’s encouragement and trust that I became actively involved in politics. Harry inspired confidence.

We maintained our friendship over the years with dinners and visits always talking about family and of course politics.

Harry was always engaging and reminded me of one of my beloved uncles even to a similar sense of humor and the bib overalls.

We all have Harry Mitchell stories to share and I feel blessed to call Harry my friend .

Fran and Family:  Nora and I adored Harry. We will not be able to attend the memorial in September as we are hosting a group of folks to the American Prairie Project. Harry went out there with us many years ago. Intersecting with him as a friend, conservationist, L&C guru, county commissioner and progressive thinker and leader was a great joy to both of us. Plus all four of our parents were his friends.  Our sympathies.

Loved Harry, made parts for his old vehicles and love his wit and knowledge

To the family of Harry :

I so treasure the members of this family and so grateful GOD put us in each others lives.  I adored your mom and Harry and will treasure my memories.  Fran and Leslie you hold such a special place in my heart. I am sending my deepest sympathies and prayers to give you strength through this difficult time. If anything is needed you know where to find me.

A fine friend, Civic leader and veteran and enjoyed putting up signs with him during campaign season.  A true friend of Agriculture and indeed a role model.
What would Harry do.... Harry was a very kind and intelligent man. He treated me with upmost respect and valued my input on projects at the farm. We need more people on the earth like Harry.

Our love to all the family. I was one of the Ayrshire Dairy baby advertisers. I have quite a collection of dairy products and and am surprised to keep finding new ones I hadn't seen. Mary Oden Troy spent time with us at the dairy visiting her sister Harriet.  I have fond memories of playing at the dairy with my LeMieux cousins. Harriet Mitchell would give a dozen of us kids wax paper to make the playground slide slick. When we were finished,  we'd fly off that slide, going what seemed to be 100 mph! My folks would purchase a metal crate of chocolate milk cartons to hand out for Halloween. When the milk cartons were dropped in the trick-or-treaters' candy bags, the bags hit the ground! We took a field trip in early elementary school years to the Ayrshire dairy and could view the milk cows and dairy workers from an inside second story window. It didn't smell too great, but in the early 1980's when I milked cows at the Kelleher Dairy, I learned to notice that the cow smell was connected to a source of income.

I went to junior high school at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Great Falls in the 1970's. I believe Laurie and Ross Mitchell also attended then. Younger Harriet Troy Dunbar and I were in college together at MSU Bozeman. We still are in touch after all these years.

I am truly grateful for my wonderful childhood upbringing,  which included quality time with the Mitchell Family.

Sincerely, Theresa Gannon Taylor
