Hal was an absolute gift to all who knew him, and I send my thoughts and prayers to all of you who knew him best.
Starting college in the Landscape Architecture department was an exciting time, as we were getting to know our "LA family". With many other majors, students studied on their own. In this major we all went to the same classes and all drew in the design studios almost every day and night on end. The only cross word was over whose turn it was to make the Taco Bell run before it closed at 2:00 a.m. We were indeed a family and Hal stood out from the beginning as one of the most kind and genuine people I had ever met. He wasn't a "kid" even back then. He was a stable force in our group. A few months ago, when we first learned of his diagnosis on Facebook, I was honored to have spoken with Hal several times. The first call was remarkable. It was as though the passage of 37 years was meaningless and I spoke with my friend from college with the same fondness and at this point, love of life and him and the determination to win. He amazed me in his example for all of us in his courage and optimism and for this his memory will always shine even a bit brighter! Farewell my friend. Your other classmates also share in the grief of loosing you and the joy of celebrating you. Kim (Hrdlicka) Elorriaga.

Hal let me come visit at Texas tech my sophomore year in HS. Had a blast and will always treasure those memories. Also made a trip with him to Fort Lauderdale for my cousins wedding. Had a blast there too #jamieleonard
