Mr. Scalini's obituary

In Loving Memory of an Extraordinary Man- Mr. Scalini

December 16, 1941 – June 28, 2025

The world lost a truly unforgettable soul with the passing of Harald Gerlitsch, known as Mr. Scalini, a man who lived life on his own terms—full throttle and unapologetically.

Born on December 16, 1941, in Austria, he came to the United States with nothing but determination, grit, and a fire in his heart. Through relentless hard work, passion, and vision, he became one of the founders of Scalini’s and Provino’s—iconic Italian restaurants that grew into beloved local institutions. These warm, welcoming places became more than just restaurants; they became gathering spots for families, celebrations, and memories that continue to be shared to this day.

Harald was the kind of man who never waited for life to happen — he made it happen. A legendary host, a world-class storyteller, and the life of every party, Harald lit up every room he walked into. He partied hard, laughed louder, and danced like no one — and everyone — was watching. Whether in Austria, a beach bar in Thailand, or a backyard in Atlanta, Harald lived in the moment and brought everyone along for the ride.

But his zest for life was matched only by the size of his heart. Harald was generous to a fault — if he had it, he’d give it, and if you needed him, he was already there. He gave not just money or help, but his presence, his time, and his sincere belief in enjoying life fully.

He was a man of the world — quite literally. Harald had a passport full of stamps and a soul full of stories. He traveled across continents, chasing culture, cuisine, and connection. Wherever he went, he left laughter, warmth, and a few new friends in his wake.

Harald is survived by the many people who loved him — friends across the globe, chosen family, and fellow travelers whose lives he touched. He may be gone from this world, but his stories, his spirit, and his unforgettable laugh live on in every sunset toast and late-night adventure.

So let’s not mourn the end, but celebrate the man — the legend — who lived one hell of a life. Raise a glass, book the trip, tell the story, and live a little louder, in honor of Harald.

Rest in peace, Mr. Scalini! You lived the best life. We’ll keep the party going for you.

In lieu of flowers, we asked you to raise a glass, take a trip, or treat a stranger to a meal—just as he would have.

He was one of a kind. And the world is better for having had him in it.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date with close friends and family.
