Obituary

Hans Fred Mager, 72, of San Luis Obispo, CA passed away from heart failure in his family home on January 26, 2023. A graveside service will take place at 11 AM on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at San Luis Cemetery. Reception to follow.

Hans Fred was born in San Luis Obispo on December 16, 1950 to Hans Liivak Mager and Irina Park Mager; Estonian emigrants who built their new home, their new life, and their family, in SLO post WWII. He graduated San Luis Obispo High School in 1969. In 1970 Hans and his first wife welcomed their daughter, Crystala. He went on to graduate Cal Poly SLO in 1974 with a degree in Civil Engineering. In the mid 70’s, he met his second wife, Ellen, while both worked at Stearns Roger in Denver, CO. They were married in 1976 and moved back to San Luis Obispo, where Hans opened his own structural engineering firm, H.F. Mager, Incorporated, and continued until his passing. During his lengthy career, Hans completed work for a number of notable projects. Hans and Ellen had three children; Jane, Hans IV, and Kate.

Hans is preceded in death by parents Hans Liivak Mager and Irina Park Mager, and his wife Ellen Shearer Mager. He is survived by his sister Ingrid Irina Mager, his first wife Crystala Rigopoulos, four children; Crystala Melea Mager Watson, Jane Ashley Mager, Hans Juri Mager, and Kate Ellen Hoxter, and six grandchildren; Linnaea Tuthill, Justin Milton, Leila Milton, James Hoxter, Reese Hoxter and Finn Hoxter.
