Background
Jules loved the water and found great joy and friends as a lifeguard, competitive swimmer, and swim instructor. She worked for many years as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the South Davis Recreation Center, and she swam competitively for South Davis Tsunami and Davis High School teams. A highlight of her passion was the many times parents made extra efforts to tell Jules that her warm, patient, and skilled approach was the best their children had experienced in the pool.
Jules was also very passionate about music. She played bass in orchestra through junior high and high school, also translating those skills into electric bass at home. She ceaselessly listened to a wide range of music. She tended away from mainstream pop looking for poly-rhythms, microtonal structure, and both classic and contemporary psychedelic rock. A description of her music passion would not be complete without noting her favorites - Vince Guaraldi and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Jules went to scores of rock shows, often with her brother and dad. In recent writing, she reflected on the deep joy and peace music brought to her life.
Donations to the H.S. Shaw Memorial fund will honor Jules' memory by supporting youth in Northern Utah to chase their passions and find joy in swimming and music. Contribute
