Gwenevere's obituary
Gwenevere Browder, a brand new resident of Naperville, IL, formerly of Park Forest, IL, passed away on December 1, 2023, at Edwards Hospital in Naperville, surrounded by her loving family and a longtime friend. Born on January 9, 1948, at Little Company of Mary in Chicago, IL, Gwenevere's life was a testament to love, compassion, and unwavering dedication.
Education was a cornerstone of Gwenevere's life. She pursued her studies at Lincoln Memorial Elementary in Robins, IL then Thomas J Kellar Elementary in Robins, IL continuing at Mother of Sorrows Catholic High School in Blue Island, IL and furthered her education at Illinois State in Normal, IL, and Governors State University in University Park, IL, earning two master's degrees. Throughout her diverse career, Gwenevere made a profound impact in various roles—as a state social worker, educator, childcare center owner, and real estate appraiser. Her passion for education was mirrored in her work, where she tirelessly advocated for children, partnering with low-income parents to help the children’s futures she encountered in the classroom.
Her daughter, Ayana-Bibi Hardeman, and granddaughter, Kymbra Ivana Hardeman, were the lights of her life. Gwenevere's love for them was boundless, and she poured her heart and soul into being a devoted mother and grandmother. They would make many trips to the planetarium, aquarium, art and science museums in Chicago. She also held deep affection for her late parents, Louise Abrams Browder Houston and Paul Browder, and cherished relationships with her late aunts Mae and Betsy, late uncles James and Joe, late brother Melvyn, cousins, sister-in-law, late step nephew, and dear friends of all ages.
Gwenevere found joy in playing the piano and speaking French fluently. Her love for gardening bloomed through her cherished flowers, particularly chrysanthemums, peonies, and tulips. Every year she would grow a patch of daffodils, because they are her daughter’s birth flower. Her reverence for nature and ancestry led her to pick out her own peach tree for her urn.
Gwenevere believed in Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of equality and marched alongside him, embodying her commitment to peace and justice for all. Her favorite quote of his, "You can kill the dreamer, but you can't kill the dream," reflected her belief that education was the path to individual freedom. She was very passionate about eradicating hate and poverty, advocating for peace and equality throughout her life.
A memorial to celebrate Gwenevere's extraordinary life will be held on January 9, 2024, at the Botanical Garden, 7402 Lake Katherine Dr, Palos Heights, IL 60463, from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Minister Sandra Robinson will be reading the eulogy and doing a service. Please reach out to the family if you need to setup a live stream for the event. Attendees are encouraged to wear a dash of orange, since that was her favorite color.
Gwenevere had an unwavering spirit and dedication to making the world a better place. Her light will continue to shine in the hearts of those she touched, leaving a permanent mark of love, compassion, and a relentless pursuit of equality and education for all. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her brilliance, beauty, and profound impact on the world.
