Gwendolyn's obituary
Mrs. Gwendolyn Davis, affectionately known as “Pumpkin,” 74, peacefully exchanged earthly time for eternal care by the Lord on the morning of March 12, 2023, surrounded by her family after battling Congestive Heart Failure at Capital Health Medical Center-Hopewell.
Born on August 15, 1948 and raised in Trenton, New Jersey, to the late Shirley Wood, she was educated in the Trenton Public School system graduating in 1966 from Trenton High School. Her high school friends described her as the sweetest, smartest girl they knew, and to this day, that still holds true.
Shortly after graduating from Trenton High School, she started working at Dunham’s for a year and then at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission for 42 years, retiring in 2010.
Gwen met her husband, Joe, of 54 years when they were in 6th grade, and by 7th grade, they were inseparable. In high school, they started dating, and in June of 1969, they married in Colorado Springs, Colorado, then had two children, Stephanie and Joseph Jr.
A God-fearing woman, she belonged to the Jerusalem Baptist Church since she was a child in Trenton, where she also served as an Usher for many years. She enjoyed traveling the world, taking ski trips, taking yearly vacations to the Bahamas and Essence Festival, shopping and getting the best deals, spending time with her children, husband, and grandchildren and continuously teaching them invaluable life lessons. As a fashionista since childhood, Pumpkin was ALWAYS put together and had the best style. She was a no-nonsense kind of woman and would always tell you the truth, giving it to you straight, no chaser. She always said, “Every generation is weaker and wiser,” and “If you make your bed hard, you gotta lay in it.”
In addition to her mother, Shirley Wood, she was predeceased by her sisters, Patricia “Tootie Ann” Brown and Barbara Wood, and her brother, William “Fats” Roy; brother-in-law, Larry Davis (Michelle); and special cousin Sylvia “Popsey” Hicks. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Joseph “Joe” Davis Sr.; her children, Stephanie Davis (Al) and Joseph Davis Jr; her grandchildren, Dominique Samuels, Mia Davis, and Nathan Harris; her sisters, Catherine “Kitty Cat” Wood, and Telita Williams; her brothers, Isaac Wood, Phillip Wood, Alvin Wood; brother-in-law Willie Davis; special cousins, Cynthia “Mookie” Thomas (Frank), Rosalee “LeeLee” Russell; a host of nieces and nephews, her very close friends, Carrie, Tootie, Sandy, Donald, and Rose; other relatives, and close friends.
