Gert's obituary
Gurneth “Gert” Francis Schneider (née Newell)
April 6, 1937 – June 13, 2025
On June 13, 2025, at the age of 88, Gurneth “Gert” Francis Schneider (née Newell) passed away, leaving behind a legacy as unforgettable as she was.
Born in Parry Sound on April 6, 1937, Gert was the eldest child of Amanda and Harold Newell and the big sister to Babe, Sharon, Dollina, Wayne, Frank, Edward, Elton, and Gordon. From the very beginning, she had a spirit that set her apart. In time, she became known throughout the community as “the lady with the hats and pins,” instantly recognizable for her glittering rings on every finger, her brooches, and her eccentric sense of fashion. Even if you didn’t know her name, once you realized she was that lady with the sparkling outfits and larger-than-life character, you never forgot her. Her family often joked that if you took the least likely outfit off a rack, Gert would wear it with pride and somehow make it hers.
At just fourteen, Gert met Howard Schneider, who became not only her lifelong partner but also the great love of her life. Together they built a family rooted in love, raising their children Danny, Tim, LeeAnn, and Larry. She was predeceased by her husband Howard, three of their children, Danny, Tim, and LeeAnn, and her lifelong friend Ruby, who now welcome her home.
Gert’s days were filled with the simple joys she cherished. She could often be found at the seniors’ club playing cards, at bingo several nights a week, or at home with a cup of tea beside her, a game of solitaire laid out on the table, and the radio playing in the background. Her style, eccentric and colourful and entirely her own, was a perfect reflection of her personality: spirited, full of character, and impossible to overlook.
She is survived by her son Larry (Krissy), her daughter-in-law Rhonda, and her son-in-law Andree; her grandchildren Ashley, Amber, Sarah, Emily, Brody, Lindsey, and Hailey; her great-grandchildren Carmen, Seth, Charlotte, Carter, Danni, and Christian; and by many nieces and nephews, including Tammy, Ryan, and Jordan.
In her later years, Gert was supported by the kindness of her friend Willy, whose steady companionship allowed her to continue enjoying the routines she loved most.
To honour Gert’s memory, her family encourages those who knew her to celebrate her in their own way: wear something bold and unexpected, enjoy a game of cards or bingo, and smile. Her family finds comfort in knowing her spirit will continue to shine through every story told, every laugh remembered, and every eccentric outfit that makes someone smile. A private family service will be held.
