It was the first fish of the night, the only fish of the night, so I made him take a picture. It counts!

I was young and very dumb back in the 90's. I was contacted by a couple of individuals who had gotten my name from a former associate. supposedly they had some nice jewelry for sale that the pawn shop was not offering enough on so I drove to Dallas to see if there was any opportunity for me to profit. When I got there i was informed there was no jewelry but a huge opportunity. So i was presented a demonstration on how a single 100 dollar bill could be reproduced 3 times due to the wet ink in our currency. It was a beautiful Demonstration. I was given one of the 100 dollar bills and instructed to take it to any bank for legitimacy. I di this and Oh my i was going to be very rich.(yes i was this ignorant). I was instructed to gather all the cash possible in 100's due to the limited activation compound available this would be a 1 time deal. I gathered my life savings giddy with excitement. it took a couple of days. I was about to head to Dallas when it dawned on me that Grover might want in on this opportunity. So I was planning on leaving with my cash the next morning when i made the call to Grover. I told him about the whole experience and the amazing opportunity. He listened intently until i said do you want to get some cash and come with me. He broke into a laugh so hard i thought he would throw up. I was confused. when his laughing subsided he said oh man i haven't heard of anyone using the green score in over 20 years. He said i may know these guys, he said call them and tell them that it is much safer to work in a rural farm town like Teague especially when your uncle is the sheriff. He said tell them to bring their cash (supposedly they had 300k) and Grover said tell them we had 500k. With this we could produce 2.4 million. He then explained they won't show because they were going to rob me when I got to Dallas with a bag of cash. He was correct they would not come to Teague and were checked out of the Motel when i arrived with Grover to confront them. Grover taught me many things through the decades and I loved him. He will be deeply missed

I remember going to a Mexican restaurant in Pittsburgh with Uncle Grover and my parents when I was a kid. As was his penchant, he had brought a deck of cards and wanted to show me some card tricks.  Without too much production, he set the cards on the dining table.  He cut them or shuffled them, and offered for me to cut them and shuffle them. I did my best.  Then, he looked me in the eye,  cupped the whole deck in his hands, and held them under the table, in his lap.  To my recollection, without ever breaking eye contact, he told me to name any card. Of course, I don't remember any of the cards that I named, but every time I called one out, he would raise one hand from under the table and drop exactly and only that card onto the table. I was blown away! As far as I could tell he was able to not only see through the table, but look down through his chin to see through the table! This went on, in fairly rapid succession, for a dozen cards or so.  I've seen some pretty impressive card tricks since then, but I don't think any have ever evoked the same sense of sheer marvel as he did in that moment. I was astonished and he was beaming.

Years later, fairly recently, I remembered a very important feature of that dining room: The entire wall behind me was a mirror. Resourceful and observant, Uncle Grover's mind  looked for mechanisms of action or patterns to decrypt the world around him. Even with that lens, he still chose to take part in child-like wonder. Among other things, I'll miss confusedly grinning while his dentures rattle along with his laugh.

Sitting in dads living room, …
Sitting in dads living room, I looked over to see this butterfly staring at us through dads glass door. Dad got up to go catch it of course, I knew it was nana, because she had collected this exact butterfly, and had it in a frame on her wall when growing up. I knew this was her, and that she had come to see dad. This butterfly stayed with for at least 20 minutes letting dad and I pass it back n forth to each other. It wasn’t till two years later that my suspicion it was her was confirmed, when my son was talking about dads mom like he new her, although he had never met her. When I asked how, he shared that dads mother had come to him in a dream that same night the butterfly visited. She was standing in front of dads house, and told Max to tell Grover she loved him. Max was to young to understand his dream at the time, and so the message never made it to dad, until a few years had passed, but it made him cry none the less
