Greta's obituary
Greta Ann (Denny) Miller, 87, of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away of natural causes on July 06, 2022, at peace and ready to meet her Lord.
Greta was born on October 5, 1934, to Walter A. and Phylliss (Phillips) Denny in Butler, Pennsylvania. Her childhood was spent with close family and many great friends in Graham Terrace (McQuistion and Old Plank Road) in Butler. After graduating from Butler High School in 1952, she went on to study Elementary Education at Slippery Rock State College, graduating with honors and beginning her career as an elementary school teacher. She later received her Master's in Education from Bloomsburg University.
Greta taught in the Butler and Pittsburgh area until moving to Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania where she resided from 1961 to 2012. There she made her impact as a wonderful and devoted teacher for 30 years, shaping the education of many students at Lime Ridge Elementary, Scott Elementary, and Mifflinville Elementary Schools. In 1979, she went back for a PhD from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and then finished her career teaching the gifted program at Riverside Elementary in Danville, Pennsylvania. She was a wonderful teacher.
Greta truly enjoyed traveling, reading, and the arts. She enjoyed being teased by her sons and sharing a movie with her daughter and playing cards with her sisters. Her summers were spent visiting her family and grandchildren and traveling around the United States, and various parts of the world. She volunteered at church and other organizations and enjoyed time with friends.
Greta was a member of All Saints Parish- Saint Peter Catholic Church in Butler, PA and Saint Columba Catholic Church in Bloomsburg, PA.
We will miss her greatly. She was kind and caring and she was a wonderful mom, always there for us.
Greta was predeceased by her parents, Walter A. Denny and Phylliss Denny, her brother, Walter "Mutt" Denny, her brother-in-law, Jerry Markle, and her granddaughter, Nicole Mears. She is survived by her three children, David Miller and wife, Debbie, of Polson, Montana, Debbie Mears and fiancé, Ken Baker of Hixson, Tennessee, and Douglas Miller of Missoula, Montana. She was a wonderful grandmother to Shawn Mears and his wife, Anna, and their son, Cole Mears of Hixson, Tennessee. Greta is also survived by her sisters, Susan Denny and Nancy Markle of Butler and sister-in-law, Jean Denny, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins in the Butler area.
There will be a funeral mass at 10 AM on Saturday, July 23rd at All Saints Parish -Saint Peters Catholic Church in Butler, followed by a luncheon at the church. She will be laid to rest at Butler County Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude's or Hospice. Cards may be sent to 150 McQuistion Rd. Butler, PA 16001.
