  1. So sorry for the loss of this dear friend.  I’ve known him since our kids were 4.  It’s been wonderful running, playing golf,  eating dinner, and drinking good beers and wine with him all these years.  His friendship with my husband Lou has been a study in what best friends can be for each other. May he rest in peace knowing that he will be sorely missed. My love and condolences to all his family and to Mary who shared such an amazing time with him.

I am so very sorry to hear of Greg's death.

Although Mr. Martin had been a favorite teacher, mentor and mock trial coach for our three children at WGHS (attending the same classes with Danner and Will) I didn't get to know him until I started working in the library there years later. The conversations we had then revealed the amazing person, seasoned teacher and friend that he was. I loved his sense of humor because it expressed a deep understanding of people. His laughter and the twinkle in his eyes showed that he was happy in his chosen career. He was always interesting -- and interested.

Greg, you were a bright spot on this earth. And although you never finished that great American novel, your impact on the many lives you touched is unforgettable. Until we meet again...

Blessings to your family.

My deepest condolences to Greg's family. I first met Greg in my freshman year of high school where he was my mock trial coach. He encouraged me to be a strong speaker and helped me prepare my most memorable closing argument involving a bicycle analogy. I’ve always enjoyed my interactions with him from his ditzy wench call-outs and wacky ties to the hours he spent with me in the library preparing for competition. He was truly an inspiring coach and wonderful person to be around. I’m grateful for the time I got to spend with him. He will be missed dearly. ❤️

Mr. Martin was one of the best teachers I had. I was also privileged to have him as a mock trial coach for 2000-2002.  He really pushed me in that experience and it was one of my proudest HS achievements. Sending lots of love to his family.

Greg was a one of a kind, top notch coach and person. He’s going to be missed by everyone he taught.
Mr.Martin changed my life. I know that seems overreaching, but it simply isn’t. Because of him, I was able to do something I never thought possible. A paper I wrote for his AP English class, was more than a paper, but was actually my very first telling of lifelong abuse I had endured. He read my paper during our reading time and I saw the tears coming down his face, I knew I had confided in the right person. He and I both understood what telling this information meant, and that he was a mandated reporter. He handled everything with such care and grace; I will never forget how he made me feel empowered and safe while going through something so vulnerable. This person went to prison for a long time, which all stemmed from this paper. Thank you Mr.Martin for helping me find my voice after being silenced. You truly changed my life for the better and I will never forget you or your immeasurable impact on my life.
Greg Martin was my favorite teacher, ever.  7th grade English at Steinbeck was unlike any other class I've ever had, because it was fun!  Greg made learning fun!  He was first and foremost a loving father figure and a teacher second.  Greg always made himself available to talk and hang out, and made me feel like my 12-13 year old self would be just fine, even though I was the 'new kid' at Steinbeck.  My favorite moments were the 3 or 4 times during the year when we played "Greg Martin's Memorial Jeopardy!"  He loved his students, and we loved him.  I'll never forget how excited he was about his running, and he talked about marathons often.  He had that curly black hair with that incomparable mustache! I would love to be there for the public October 23 celebration of his life.  In the 40+ years since I was in his class, I have thought of Greg often, in fact quite often.  I will always have a picture of him in my mind, and he helped me navigate the horrors often associated with 7th grade.  Steinbeck was never the same after he left, and Willow Glen was the beneficiary of his greatness.  My brother Grant, 10 years my junior, also had Greg as a teacher at WG.

Mr. Martin was one of my favorite  teachers at WG, he not only taught us but really cared about his students.

I was lucky enough to have him for two years and he always provided for fun debates and my favorite assignment was an essay on the Things they carried.

Rest In Peace Mr. Martin

When I think of teachers who had a big influence on me, Mr.Martin was certainly one of those teachers. He was one of those few adults in my adolescence who treated me with respect. I laughed in earnest in his class, argued with classmates passionately, and appreciated the literature I read during his class with all my heart. Mr.Martin's class helped me hone and cultivate my love of reading and writing.  I think in some ways he has helped me become the teacher I am now: I love my students, I tell them the truth, and call out nonsense when I see it.

I'm saddened by his death and the fact that we never got together socially (we ran into each other at Safeway in Almaden and said we would).  I could kick myself.

Danner and Will, I'm sorry to hear about your dad. You're in my thoughts. Big hugs to you and your family. Tonight, we'll lift a glass to Greg Martin.

Mr. Martin was an amazing teacher and saw the potential in all of us.  My high school memories resonate around his writing classes.
First of all I'm heartbroken for my cousins and extended family who lost a father and loved one. I always really enjoyed my Uncle Greg as I called him. I have countless memories and most of them revolve around sports and summer. It seemed as if every summer my mom would put us kids in the car and drive us down to San Jose to spend time with our grandparents, cousins, and aunt/uncles. It was always a highlight. With Greg and family there were many baseball games at Candlestick Park, whiffle ball games in the street and front yard, a beach getaway to Capitola, and lots of other excursions around town. One funny anecdote that I will never forget was going to the UW-Stanford football game in '91. I was 14 at the time and it was an early intro to tailgating. Although I don't recall having the opportunity to partake in any adult beverages I do remember that it did provide some time to chat amongst ourselves before the game kicked off. I recall my uncles asking me if I had a girlfriend or something to that effect and I was likely embarrassed by the line of questioning and I also gave off a vibe of teenage desperation probably! LOL  At one point Greg said that I was so lovelorn (or similar language) that I would likely marry the first girl that would date me! That always stuck in my brain that I would never do that. It certainly crossed my my mind when I entered the dating world years later. Thanks (I think?) for the motivation Uncle Greg to not settle too early. RIP

Greg was a great colleague.  We were (teacher) Bums for Annie while at WG.  We once went to a local liquor store (in costume) after a show and the owner threatened to throw us out. Watching him coach basketball was always entertaining.  He will be missed.
