Gregory was born in Los Angeles on October 18, 1949. His childhood and youth were filled the trials and inspirations of a big family and a vibrant life in southern California. When he graduated from high school and approached adulthood, he headed to Santa Cruz.

In May of 1969, during his junior year of college, Gregory joined the garden project at the University of California at Santa Cruz led by Alan Chadwick. Soon after graduation, …
