Greg's obituary
Our family is saddened to announce the passing of Gregory (Greg) Charles Johnson, 64, of Ottawa, Ontario, who peacefully passed away at Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice on Saturday October 1, 2022 surrounded by loved ones, after a courageous battle with stomach cancer.
Greg was born on August 29, 1958 to Dennis and Joan Johnson in Ottawa, ON. He graduated from Philemon Wright High School (Hull, QC). Greg had many interests throughout his life including scuba diving, baseball, golf, and curling. He played minor league baseball in his late teens and on several local teams until his 40s. Then, when his playing career ended, he became an umpire for the Eastern Ontario Umpire Association and served on the Board of Directors as President. His professional field was in health and safety.
In June 1987, while instructing a Discover Scuba Experience, Greg met Olena. A year later they began to date and were wed on July 14, 1990. Greg and Olena loved to travel, ballroom dance, golf, scuba dive and enjoy their backyard oasis together.
He is survived by his “WW”, wonderful wife, Olena, his bestest buddy WB, his mother Joan, his brother Steve (Jenny), his nieces Laura and Paige, his nephews Cole and Adam (Mary), his great niece Ryland, his sister-in-law Lada (Terry), his nieces Anhalyna (Jasmin), Zoryana (Jon), Bohdahna, and his nephews Andriy, and Taras (Lindsay), his great nieces Shiloh and Sunnie and great nephew Sage. Greg was predeceased by his father Dennis, his brother Allan and sister-in-law Margot.
Greg loved to entertain, was a gracious host and always had a story to share. He was an avid gardener and while stuck at home during Covid-19, with great joy he created a relaxing “Cottage” for the summer, and cozy “Chalet” for the winter in their backyard. Greg was a social butterfly, welcoming everyone, and always lending a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Greg will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Memorial Liturgy will be held at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine, 952 Green Valley Crescent, Ottawa, ON K2C 3K7 at 2:00 pm.
Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 641, 3500 Fallowfield Road, Nepean, ON K2J 4Z7 at 4:00 pm.
Olena would like to thank Dr. Aqeel Degani and Dr. Kamla Swami for their compassion, and the staff at the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice for their outstanding care.
