Cher Bauer
2022, Buckeye, AZ, USA
I met Greg this year on May 14th at the White Tank Mountain Conservatory Auction- local artists painted Javelina(s). Greg was a volunteer for the Conservatory and was helping out. He said, "Cher I'm going to stop bidding against you I know this belongs to you, but I would have given you a run for your money" and then he gave me that Glorious Greg Smile!

We became friends, and I met Sadie. Later Greg took Sadie into his home and offered to find a her a new home. While Greg was off to one of his many adventures, I offered to dog-sit Sadie. As a Thank you he gave me "Second Edition White Tank Mountain Field Guide." In August we actually hiked the White Tank Mountains, and I took the picture of the Glorious View not knowing the future. I'm so grateful for this experience!

We later co-shared Sadie and eventually I was blessed to be her forever home. On December 10th Greg reached out to tell me it was Sadie's 2nd birthday. I sent him pictures, and I also changed her name a bit. I explained that her original mom was Donna and my mom in Heaven was Donna Mae, so I believed she was a gift from my Angels, so I named her Sadie Mae. Greg's last message was "Ahwwww that's great and she looks GREAT! I get the name change and agree this makes way more sense. She found the perfect home/owner Cher. Happy BD Sadie Mae".  Now every time I look at Sadie Mae, I know it was actually (3) Angels that brought her to me.

I was shocked and sad when I learned about Greg. I know that in 64.9 years he lived life at full throttle, he had so many adventures he would tell a story and you felt like you were there with him, he had some really Great Jokes and I'll remember forever "Doc says you're gonna die!" Lol he touched so many lives and we All have so many GREAT memories!!!

I’m heart-broken…and also eternally grateful for 43 years of friendship with my Brother Greg. So many shared adventures and experiences, while supporting each other through life’s highs and lows. We met as members of the college track team and, frankly, were unlikely friends – Greg was full of energy every moment of every day, the life of the party, quick with a quip, ever-loyal to his friends, and a friend to everyone; if an experience was new, he wanted to try it! I was introverted, socially uncomfortable, risk-averse, and Jewish with immigrant parents. But, we hit it off and I’m forever blessed for a lifetime of adventures with Brother Greg, from coast-to-coast, as well as Canada, Mexico, and Europe. So, so hard to pick one memory that captures what a uniquely special man Greg was… During winter of our senior year of college, the entire campus lost power. There was no heat, and in our tiny dorm room, condensation clouds followed every word we spoke or every time we laughed. Greg’s sense of humor never wavered! But, it kept getting colder and colder, with the moisture inside our windows turning into thick ice; the temperature must have been in the low-30s in our room, and my distance runner body had no insulation. In the middle of the night, Greg jokingly “yelled” that he couldn’t sleep because of my shivering and teeth chattering. He laughed, threw his blanket across the room at me, and went back to sleep with only a thin sheet for warmth. Brother Greg, you were a rare combination – as strong and hearty as the toughest Montana rancher, with an ever-present heart of gold that always overflowed with kindness, goodness, consideration for others, and an ever-present spirit of adventure.

Greg pushed life experiences to the limit, always with curiosity, laughter, and quickly adapting to the unexpected. I’m forever grateful for the experiences we shared together. Just an example: Our “3 weeks for $300” travel adventure during college winter break included (1) Getting caught in the middle of an armed standoff (while cruising the bayous of Houma, Louisiana) between our tough-as-nails old Cajun woman guide and neutria poachers trespassing on her property, (2) A host of adventures fit for a novel in Acapulco and Mexico City, from cheap bullfights to Greg befriending a retired Chicago cab-driver that took us to his special bar in a bad neighborhood on Christmas Eve, where Greg led Christmas caroling with a host of poor working families, single mothers and their young kids…it was joyful and really didn’t matter that Greg didn’t speak any Spanish, (3) Getting eaten alive by mosquitos while sleeping in 99% humidity in our rental car on the Overseas Highway to Key West…with the vague hope that we would meet Jimmy Buffet once we got there; it was an adventure to laugh about, and our mosquito bites were badges of courage!

Greg was one of the most gifted and talented people I've ever known.  Greg was a great friend and always there for me when I needed some encouragement or trying to find a way to break through barriers in life and career. Greg and Cathy were our inspiration in moving to West Linn more than 20 years ago. I'm so sad today but Greg is resting now in a better place. Heartfelt condolences from me and our family. For Mathew and Katie - Your dad was so proud of you and loved you so much. Hes always going to be there for you, he left you with those amazing gifts!
I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Greg at SAP. He was always a breath of fresh air and sunshine (apt given his passion for the outdoors). I admired his keen business mind and his ability to immediately "get" people and bond with them. He was also very selfless with his time and would often mentor the less experienced on the team. His impact was great and will continue on in the lives of those he touched. I also enjoyed hearing of his many exploits after he left SAP, his adventures in OR and AZ, and how he spoke lovingly about his family. Love, strength, and condolences to all of you as you remember him and his impact. Matt and Cindy Laukaitis

Cathy and family, we are very sorry to hear of your loss.

We’re thinking of you and keeping you all in our prayers.

It was a pleasure knowing Greg through his son, Matt. Greg was always so warm and welcoming, and I look back fondly at the time spent at his Sellwood condo during my high school years. My favorite memory in more recent years was when he was living in Bend, and Matt convinced him to be a last-minute addition to our annual rafting trip on the Deschutes river. Getting new additions on this trip isn’t easy, as not many are comfortable joining our dysfunctional boat that my brother captains and features nothing other than Lunchables and light beer; Greg, however, was a seamless addition. It was an incredible day on the water, and I always hoped we’d get Greg to join again in later years. He will be dearly missed.

Greg was a stud!! A true man’s man!!

Greg was a very good football tackle that went both ways on offense and defense! He made the Shriners Team!! We were playing in the Columbia Division championship game at Lake Oswego and I was the quarterback and also playing both ways and I was super excited talking fast in the huddle and Greg chimed in very calmly and said in the huddle settle down just settle down!! That calmed me and the team down and we ended up winning the game in a smash mouth mud bowl football game!! I went to Lewis & Clark College with Greg and his work ethic was extraordinary!! My memories of Greg will never fade and his legacy will live on through his children, loved ones and friends🙏🙏💪

Greg you will be missed!! R.I.P. ❤️💪🙏

Our thoughts and concerns are with you as you navigate this very unexpected turn of events. We are so sorry for your loss. Greg was a wonderful individual and will be missed by all of us.
Greg was always very gracious with his time and energy helping me(his daughters friend) become a successful young professional. At the peak of his career when he was busier than ever, he still took the time to check in with me on writing cover letters and prepping my resume for my job interviews. During his last few years in Portland, Greg and Kaitlynn’s door was always open to me. I’ll forever be grateful for those times BBQ’ing on the deck or hanging out by the pool. Sending my love to Matt and Kaitlynn during these difficult times.
Bob and I are so very sorry for your loss. Greg always had a smile, especially when he was playing pickleball

To know you is to love you - The teeth and the tan could be spotted a mile away, if the distinct voice and dad joke didn't get to you first. It wasn't 5 seconds in any room before you'd make at least one new friend.

Your charisma and grit and zest for life is something only few get to live.

A mile a minute sometimes couldn't even keep up with you. Words can't describe the sadness this has left so many people, myself included. I wish you got to fully recognize the force you truly were.

So many life lessons you coached me on, and I'm forever indebted to you for. So many memories and adventures we ve had together.

Some of my favorites:

Our time living together in the Sellwood condo as roommates. I was in college, you were a high-up executive who was traveling 3+ weeks a month. But at the end of each week, we'd have our Sunday dinner with peppers and steak and chat about the week passed. You'd then "turn in" your receipts to me so i could submit your expense report - the cruelest form of punishment in exchange for my rent ;) But i cherish all of our talks and walks around the neighborhood together and what i wouldn't give for one more Sunday dinner with you.

A more recent memory that means more now than i ever could imagine was our paddle boarding trip over this past summer. I took the day off of work, and you and i were the only two people on the Salt River for 99.9% of the 4hr paddle - which had me convinced that you overshot our exit off the water multiple times. (The one time we did bump into a small group, you managed to befriend, exchange contact info, AND grab a photo together ... in the 4 mins we had to spare before the rapid cluster. No surprise) During our paddle, we got to see over 75 wild horses enter and cross the river within arms length throughout our trek and each time we saw a pack cross, we'd stop and just admire them.

And after each crossing, we'd immediately look at each other and agree how beautiful life really is and how lucky we are have been there, together.

I am so proud to say i am your daughter. Thank you for loving me in all the ways you did. You will be missed in every moment. Keep working on more dad joke material - I'm going to need them when we meet again. Rest In eternal Peace, Dad. I love you

I have had the distinct pleasure of  knowing Greg for just over 1 year.   From the first day I met Greg on the Pickleball courts, he had a big smile, great sense of humor and showed that he really cared about others, always giving compliments and words of encouragement. We became good friends, PB drilling buddies and played several PB tournaments together.  I am shocked and deeply saddened by his passing. I hope Greg is at peace and I will fondly remember his short but positive influence on my life.
