Greg is my grandpa. And a great one at that. He was a wonderful man, and we both shared a love for all the arts. Last time I seen him, I read some Robert frost with him. A few days before he passed, I sent him this poem. Thought I’d share it.
Mr Barnes was my choir teacher in high school he was my most favorite teacher he was tough on me but only because he truly cared and you could tell a mile away he did Mr Barnes is an amazing man and my condolences to his family I pray for healing and peace during this difficult time. He always made sure his students knew he was there if we ever needed him Mr Barnes you are loved by so many of us and you will be missed but never forgotten your an amazing man with an amazing heart who I look up to. Rest in peace and fly high!

Post-show for Paint Your Wago…

Post-show for Paint Your Wagon. I drove north to Aurora to see the show, and drove back to the Cities the same day to get back for work. It was so fun to see everyone a year after I graduated. — with Kate Barnes and Esther Jones
Mr. Barnes was my music teacher from kindergarten all the way through my senior year of high school. Other than my parents and grandparents, he was the most consistent long-term adult presence in my life. I feel like I could write a thesis about Mr. B's impact on my life, but I'll stick to some highlights. I feel like high school is hard for most people for any number of reasons, and, me being no different, I found my sanctuary in his choir room. In 2012, the year the attached video is from, I found myself in that room in the mornings for Jazz Choir rehearsals, at some point for class, in the afternoon for small group practices, and after school with Haylee Donnelson and Mr. B coming up with harmonies for songs like this one or listening to this fun new acapella group called Pentatonix until our ears burned and we had our individual parts memorized. He pushed me to be more confident and take up more space with my voice. He was tough, but in the way that makes you happily rise to meet expectations, not in the way that makes you shrivel up. I sat in the passenger seat of a 15-passenger van on several occasions on trips to Minneapolis or Northfield trying my best to understand what was so special about the Classic Rock songs he loved so much. I looked forward to caroling at assisted living homes with him over Christmas Break during college, and to pie at Village Inn when we'd meet to catch up. I will always be sad about not having the organizing skills or connections with his previous students to throw him a "Mr. Holland's Opus"-style retirement show, although I'm sure he received lots of appreciation in other ways. In January of this year, I decided that 2024 would be the year I do more communal singing like the kind I did in choir in high school, and it's been a fun journey exploring ways to do that as a busy adult. I've learned that singing is a physical practice that is grounding and meditative, and makes me feel at home in my body. Guess who I learned that from? I miss you already, Mr. Barnes.

Greg and I were in All State Choir in South Dakota.   Yo! 🎤  We were also in theater together. (Paint your Wagon).   We were inseparable and high school, and we sang all the time.   One day we will be reunited, and we will sing again, beautifully  together in Heaven.   I love you Brother!

Barnes was a wonderful man who helped me a lot through years, be it teaching or singing. He was able to bring out my musical abilities and show me how to be a better teacher. His personality would light up the room and you always knew were he was. I always enjoyed the conversations we would have after racquetball or during lunch. He brought so much joy into the world. Rest in peace my friend and I'll keep your family in my thoughts and prayers, as you always did for others.
Mr. Barnes. What do I even say? The impact you had on my life, students lives, the schools life. EVERYONES LIFE is unforgettable. You’re a true inspiration. You taught me everything about music. You were so funny. Your quirks. Oh and when you’d get mad! This loss is a massive one. You kept some of us in school. We WANTED to be in your class. We wanted to sing your songs. Please sing to us from above. What an incredible musician you are. From singing to instruments. Your voice will always be with us. Rest in Peace, my teacher and friend.

This story is to go with the photo I posted. For those who may not know me, Greg was my uncle. In the picture I posted he is with us at a family gathering enjoying pizza sitting across from my daughter(his great niece) Lily. Lily is 4 and very shy, she usually takes a long time to warm up to someone. Not Uncle Greggy, he had such a warm, comforting, welcoming presence and Lily had no trouble sitting across from him and sharing stories and laughs.  Which was one of my favorite things to do with him as well! And of course quote movies!!! I am so blessed to have had such an amazing uncle and to have gotten to share him with my children.
Mr. Barnes, You were always there for my boys, and I can’t thank you enough. Your classroom was a haven for many. All the concerts, the musicals, the caroling and the trip to the cities are memories that will live forever. Your presence in our lives will never be forgotten. Thea and kids- I am so terribly sorry for your loss. Greg meant the world to our family and his heart and spirit will always be with us.

As a new teacher starting in the district Barnesy reached out after finding out I was actually a teacher and not a student to check how I was doing. You knew with him what you were going to get and that included involving me in things. From joining the musical (Paint Your Wagon)he put on  to racquetball at Supreme Court (old man had the skill to keep us young guys on our toes) to helping him out at his house in exchange for dinner he was a good friend and I was glad to have known him. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
I had Mr.Barnes as a choir teacher throughout the end of my middle school years. He made his classroom something to look forward to everyday , weather we were working on music theory or learning new songs. Mr. Barnes also made me and my fellow classmates more determined to learn and grow , not just in his class or school for that matter, but in everyday life. Even now being out of high school, his personality and classroom environment is something I have and always will remember and cherish. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
