Gregg's obituary
Gregg, often referred as "G" or "G$$," loved taking taking pictures. He would take ten pictures of the same sunset or snowscape because he saw the unique beauty in each frame. In a world that is consumed by the digital, he clung to the physical and accumulated boxes with hundreds of pictures of loved ones and beautiful landscapes. Despite being outwardly reserved, he was truly a sentimentalist. What most would throw out, he kept. He held on to literal scribbles I drew as a toddler and the competition numbers from when we did running events together.
He loved running and going on long walks in the nature preserve near his home and at the trails behind Diehl's Orchard. The two of us would go on many a run there and devour a whole bag of their freshly made donuts afterwards. He loved trains and we would walk for miles on the tracks and he would, more often than not, indulge in my desire not to head back until we saw a train. While I can't say he "loved" it, he would spend hours pulling me on a sled through the snowy pathways near his house (although he rudely refused in recent years.)
He loved birdwatching and possessed an extensive collection of binoculars and bird books. One of my favorite things to do was going to the feed store with him to buy seed to feed the birds. We would often go to Colasanti's Market and the first thing he would do is head to the back to say hello to the parrots they kept, which I found absolutely endearing.
He loved taking boat rides around Pontiac Lake while enjoying an Oberon (or more than one). We would spend nights playing multiple rounds of Scrabble and see who could finish the latest Harry Potter book first (I won).
He found the love of his life with his wife, Irene. She had a natural charisma that brought out the best in him and they had nearly 20 years together before she passed away. They had hoped to retire to Tybee Island, Georgia, which I had had the pleasure of joining them on a few of their many visits. It was a tradition to have a "Big Ol' Mary" at the pink bar by the ocean.
I can't help but think about all the things we never got the chance to do but I have a lifetime of memories and I take solace in the fact that he's at peace and, if there is a heaven, he's there sipping on a Bloody Mary. I hope you know how much I love you. There won't be a day that goes by that I won't miss you. Take care, G.
