There are few constants in life. Greg was one. No matter what was going on in his personal life—if things were good or if there were serious stresses on him, one couldn’t tell. Always funny, intelligent, and thoughtful. I’ve never meet anyone else who could make you laugh out loud during intense debate like him. His lack of pretense, and self depreciating wit were contagious.

Whenever I think of Greg, I recall how when we were roommates, our building super, Enrique, called him El Gigante. Greg hated the nickname because, given Enrique was about 5 foot, it could have been applied to any of us. But remembering those early years in New York, I think of how Greg looked out for his friends, insisting Karen and I make taxis drop us off in front of the door instead of the corner late at night. He would always offer to help if you needed anything. How just when they thought they had gotten rid of me, he and Karen took me in after I lost my job and home following 9/11. He was kind, considerate, and could always make you laugh. To me, the nickname fit Greg not because of his height but because of his heart and sense of humor. And, now, the great loss felt with his passing.

I am so sorry to hear about Greg’s passing. We played football together at Columbia. He was a giant human and a smile to go with his physical presence. He will be missed. God bless Greg and his family during this difficult time.
