Gordon's obituary

Gordon Lee Smith, 72, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, at his home in Boerne, Texas.

Lee was born on February 23, 1953, in Quitman, Mississippi, to Bonner Lee Smith and Mary Alice Sumerau Smith, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lillie Catherine Smith, who passed on December 9, 2024.

Lee spent his high school years in North Augusta, South Carolina, where he played football and golf and graduated from North Augusta High School in 1971. He grew up hunting and fishing along the Savannah River, experiences that fostered his lifelong love of the outdoors. Beginning in high school, Lee proudly worked the Masters Golf Tournament each year, continuing until he left Atlanta, Georgia, in 1989.

He went on to attend the University of South Carolina, earning a bachelor’s degree. A devoted Gamecock, Lee remained a loyal fan throughout his life.

Lee married Catherine in June of 1983, and together they raised four children. In 1989, the family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where Lee served as Vice President for Auto Chlor System. In 1993, Lee accepted a position with Scott Paper Company, which brought the family to San Antonio, Texas. Life there was filled with golf, hunting, attending his children’s many activities, and time spent with Catherine.

In 2002, Lee, Catherine, and their son Jacob relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida, where Lee became President of Harmsco, Inc. Lee and Catherine cherished their years in Florida, especially being close to the ocean. When he wasn’t on the golf course, Lee could often be found fishing.

The family returned to San Antonio in 2006, where Lee and Catherine spent the remainder of their years together. In retirement, Lee found his greatest joy in time spent with his grandchildren, cheering on the Gamecocks, traveling to the coast with friends, and driving cars for Sewell.

Lee is survived by his children and their families: Bridget Medina and husband Omar, and their children: Lillie and Sam; Michelle Seger and husband Mark, and their children: Brandt, Catherine, and Charlotte; Leah Ratliff and husband Travis, and their children: Alicia, Parker, Hudson, and Lynna; and Jacob Smith and wife Kim, and their children: Leona and Lodie. He is also survived by his sisters Nancy Ferguson and her husband Camp of Augusta, GA, and Cynthia Kersey, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces & great nephews.

Lee was a wonderful man who truly enjoyed life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
