Mickey curtis
1965, Seagraves, TX, USA
Gordon was one of the most mild managed people I have ever known. Back in the day when Seagraves was a thriving agricultural and oil production community the “kids”!all used to drive up and down Main Street over to Garlands Dixie Dog and sometimes downtown Kirks Drive In diner. The main “hangout” was my Uncle’s filling station on the corner across from the Bank and the Drug Store. We, Gordon, Bill Hollifield, Dewayne “ Peanut” Martin , Glen Moore, Rodney (sorry can’t remember his last name), were pretty bored one night and came up with the idea to put an old outside toilet in the middle of Main Street. Don’t really recall whose idea it actually was, but at the time it sounded really good to everyone, so off we went to the Rodeo Grounds. I had an old junk vehicle that was half car- half pickup that we had “ cluged “ together so we began the task of loading the “privy “ onto the back of the truck. Someone fell in “the hole” in the process of getting it loaded and wasn’t allowed to ride In anyone’s vehicle so they had to hold the thing in the back of the truck bed. No straps, no sideboards, just a flatbed and raw strength holding it for the drive to Main Street. Did I mention that all this took place around 2:00 am? Well we finally made the trek and deposited the “Magic Box” in the town square smack dab in the middle of Main Street. Mission accomplished, right? Not exactly......
There was another “hangout” for the “Gearheads” (that’d be us) where we could work on our cars, make homemade beer in a bathtub, and literally create a bond amongst friends that to this day, I cherish . That hangout was Peanuts parents old apartments. The local constabulary knew where we would be on just about any Saturday afternoon and they took advantage of knowing that and proceeded to “visit “ us and let us know that they would appreciate us returning our ill gotten relic from the past to its rightful home. Seems a local reporter from the Seagraves Times had taken a photo shoot of the building sitting in the middle of the town square an written a story showing concern that he surely hoped we had not returned to a time where these facilities were in common use in everyone’s day to day life.
We obliged the Sheriff’s request and returned the privy to its original location. Gordon was a part of this with our group of friends. Times were different back then, kids were different, we had a great time without harming anyone or destroying property. I remember my Dad finding out I was involved in the great toilet heist and nearly skinning my hide, until my Mom interrupted and him in the middle of his scolding and simply asked him “Who was it that put a wagon on top of the Drugstore in O’Donnel one time?” His only reprove was” It took us all night to take that damn thing apart and get it up there!” End of story. Stories like this tell the histories of people and communities that must never be forgotten, as well as Gordon will never be forgotten.
