Gordon's obituary
The world just got a little quieter without Gordon "Tony" Brown, 62, of The Bronx, who left us unexpectedly on December 21, 2024. Tony’s unexpected departure has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but we are comforted by the many cherished memories he leaves behind.
Born on December 9, 1962, in Charleston, SC, to Emily and Joseph Brown, Tony spent his early years in Mt. Pleasant, where he grew up alongside his eight sisters. After graduating from Wando High School in 1983, Tony’s adventurous spirit led him to New York City, where he soon found his calling in the plumbing trade with his brother-in-law at Harlem Hospital.
Tony was known for his vibrant personality and his passions, which centered around his love for fitness and basketball. He was often seen playing basketball in Central Park or Sedgwick Houses in the Bronx, earning the affectionate nickname “Air Gordon.” He was a familiar face at the Jack LaLanne gym in the Bronx, where fate would bring him to Leslie, who worked nearby at the New York Public Library Kingsbridge Branch. They exchanged glances and friendly waves for months, before Tony finally gathered the courage to speak to Leslie in November 1990. They quickly fell in love, and together, they built a beautiful life.
Over the course of more than 40 years in The Bronx, Tony formed lasting friendships and created a blended family that meant the world to him. His love for his family was unwavering, and he expressed that love in his own unique way.
Tony was a man of hard work and determination - certainly not afraid of a long hard days work. He spent his life providing for his family with a work ethic that was second to none. His compassion, integrity, and dependability earned him the love and respect of those who knew him.
Tony was a devoted brother, husband, father, and grandfather whose passions were simple - his family (with a special pedestal for his grandchildren), basketball, scenery and serenity, occasional travel, luxury cars, late night TV-watching with his wife... and backseat driving whenever his wife was behind the wheel.
Due to illness, he retired from plumbing in 2022. While this was a difficult adjustment, Tony saw this as an opportunity to spend additional time with the family.
Anyone who knew Gordon knew that he was a dependable friend, and loving brother, father, and husband. And his legacy is embedded in the laughs, tears, strength, care, and stubborn love he gave to all his family and friends from South Carolina to New York, Virginia to California, and everywhere in between.
Gordon was pre-deceased by his older brother Joseph Brown, his father Joseph Brown, and his mother Emily Wells Brown.
He is survived by:
