Gordon's obituary
August 27, 1945 – March 26, 2021
Gordon Darrold Banry, age 75, passed away Friday morning, March 26th, 2021 due to complications from surgery.
Gordon was born in Medford, Oregon, to Nate and Elizabeth (Shoemaker) Banry.
He was a forth generation Banry to grow up in the Gold Hill area, graduating from Crater High School in 1963.
He served in the Northern States Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
After completing his mission he remained in Hancock, Michigan to serve in the Police Department.
He returned home to his family in Gold Hill in December of 1966, just in time to have his appendix removed.
He met his wife, Ellen Groom, shortly after his recovery from surgery, and they were married six months later on the 13th of June 1967.
They raised four children: Shauna Banry Lean and Gordy Banry, (both of Friday Harbor, WA), Debbie Banry Dickinson, of Fairhaven, WA; and Lincoln Banry. of Medford, OR.
Gordon served in the Bellevue, Washington Police Department, and the BYU Police force. He was also a partner with his brothers-in-law in a motor freight company in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. Later, building on his police and trucking background, he became the Jackson County Weigh Master for 27 years.
Gordon cherished his wife of fifty-three years, sang his favorite 1950s songs with a voice one can only describe as…memorable, and loved old cars…so much so, he was known to read auto repair manuals just for entertainment! Gordon was agreeable in spirit and flexible in body…in fact, he may have been the only man alive, young or old, who could sit on his folded feet…work in that position for hours, then stand up and walk away like there was nothing to it! Being a natural-born auto mechanic, he was not selfish with his talent, often helping family and friends service and repair their cars…all for no charge, of course.
And despite all this knuckle-busting work, he was a man of such great faith that his vilest vernacular was: “Dad-gummit, Banry!” He truly enjoyed his time spent with serving others as his way of serving the Lord. He will be remembered for his loving, kind-hearted, and generous nature, and for the many, many lives he touched over the years.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and survived by his wife, Ellen, and their children: Shauna Lean, Gordy Banry, Debbie Dickinson, and Lincoln Banry, plus siblings, Nate Banry, Clayte Banry, Becky Banry Hicks, and Gwen Banry Burton; plus thirteen grandchildren, eight great grand children, and many nieces and nephews.
A private, family memorial service will be held Saturday, April 3, 2021. The family expresses their deep appreciation for the beautiful flowers, wonderful food, cards and out-pouring of love they have received.
